Ex-Michigan coach Sherrone Moore hit with charges as more details of his affair and firing emerge

It has been a bit of a rough week for Sherrone Moore, to say the least. He went from head coach of Michigan football to being fired, caught cheating with a staffer, and hit with multiple charges by police.

Of course, the breaking aspects of this story have already been covered, but I wouldn’t be here writing this if new details hadn’t emerged about Moore’s firing and how it all went down. The more information that comes out, the more this story comes into focus.

We already know Sherrone Moore’s relationship with his assistant Paige Shiver took a dark turn after an accidental pregnancy. He forced her to get an abortion and raised her salary to keep quiet.

According to reports, Shiver was the one who exposed the affair to Michigan officials. Obviously, Moore’s mental state was deteriorating, so she brought the evidence out to bring an end to the whole thing.

What adds an interesting wrinkle to how Michigan handled this situation is that the school was already aware of his mental health issues. Even though this was known, athletic director Warde Manuel fired him one-on-one with no one else present and sent him on his way.

I’m not here to defend Sherrone Moore’s actions, and we can’t just throw mental health issues around as an excuse for behavior like this, but I can’t help but feel Michigan could have done more. Not even for his sake, but the sake of his family and Shiver who were put at greater risk due to how this was handled.

Think about it. You know this person is mentally unstable and already in a stressful position, and you decide to deliver him the worst news of his life with no guardrails in place.

Again, no excuse for Moore to do what he did, but if there was at least some security present, this might not have happened. Plus, this firing essentially put a target on Shiver’s back because he knew she had exposed the whole affair.

Details that emerged in court today confirmed what we reported in our initial story in terms of threats of suicide and physical harm. It’s crazy that CFB Twitter was able to unearth these details before any credentialed reporters could, but that’s the power of college football fans.

I genuinely do not understand Michigan’s thought process in all of this. Obviously, he had to be fired; he violated policy by sleeping with a staffer. But they just ended up risking that staffer’s life. I’m not saying every aspect of this should be under their control – they were dealing with an unstable individual, after all – but they definitely could and should have done something to mitigate those possibilities.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t enjoyed writing this. It’s an interesting and important story to tell, but the opportunities for humor are sparse. Fortunately, Twitter users don’t feel that way. They’re mainly fixated on how ludicrous threatening to kill yourself with a butter knife is.

Some sources are even saying Sherrone Moore pulled out a Nerf gun and threatened to paint the wall with his brains. And my sources are never wrong.
