Duck Hunting: Trevor Zegras had last night circled and the Anaheim felt every bit of it
Trevor Zegras didn’t need to say much Tuesday night. He let the goals do the talking.
The Philadelphia Flyers winger torched his former team, scoring twice in a 5–2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, and made sure the message was received loud and clear.
After his first goal, Zegras pulled his hand out of his glove, mimicked answering a phone call, and hung it up almost immediately.
Trevor Zegras with the Celly… celly
Postgame, Zegras confirmed exactly what everyone was thinking. The celebration was a nod to how quickly things ended with Anaheim when he was traded last June.
“That’s about how quick the phone call was before, so I thought it’d be good,” Zegras told NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Cold. But fair.
Trevor Zegras is becoming a Philly Legend
Selected ninth overall by the Ducks in 2019, Trevor Zegras was once the face of their rebuild. Flashy hands, highlight-reel goals, and a marketing dream.
Then injuries piled up, patience wore thin, and Anaheim moved on, shipping him to Philadelphia for Ryan Poehling and a second-round pick.
Fast forward to now, and Zegras looks very much like a player who needed a fresh start.
The 24-year-old is closing in on a career-best season with the Flyers, posting 17 goals and 41 points in 41 games. That puts him on pace for his first point-per-game season, surpassing even his 2022–23 campaign when he tallied 65 points with Anaheim.
After playing just 31 games in 2023–24 and 57 the year before, Zegras is finally healthy and it shows.
“I had been thinking about this game for a long time,” Zegras said. “It was one that meant a lot to me. It was definitely cool to get one and then two, so it was special.”
Now thriving with Philadelphia Flyers, Zegras has found a better fit and a clearer role, and the production is following.
The timing matters too. He’s in the final year of his three-year, $17.25 million contract and headed toward restricted free agency. If this season is any indication, that next deal is going to look a lot healthier than the last couple years suggested.
As for Anaheim Ducks, they got a front-row seat to what they gave up. Two goals. A phone-call celly. And a reminder that sometimes talent just needs the right place to breathe.
Trevor Zegras found his and on Tuesday night, he made sure his old one remembered it.
