Eagles get 2 All-Pro nods, both in the defensive secondary
I used to pray for times like this — literally. The All-Pro teams were announced today, and two Eagles made the cut, both coming from the defensive secondary.
To absolutely no one’s surprise, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean were named first-team All-Pros in just their second seasons in the league. An unreal accomplishment for both, and yet another reminder of how absurdly precise Howie Roseman is when it comes to identifying problems and fixing them fast.
Eagles defensive backs get their first All-Pro nods of their careers
The last time an Eagles cornerback was named an All-Pro was more than 20 years ago, when Lito Sheppard pulled it off in 2004. What just happened is even rarer: it’s only the third time in NFL history that two players on the same side of the ball were drafted in the first two rounds and made first-team All-Pro within their first two seasons.
And it’s worth remembering just how bleak things were before Coop and Quinyon showed up. The year prior, the Eagles ranked 31st in pass defense. Darius Slay was getting older, James Bradberry fell completely off a cliff, and there was nothing behind them. Nothing. Then Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean walked through the door.
Now? The Eagles have the 8th-best pass defense in football, and both young corners are first-team All-Pros. What a time to be alive.
Shoutout to Howie for pulling this off. A problem that tortured the Birds’ defense for years was fixed in one draft class. He is, and always will be, the best GM this city has ever seen.
