Norwegian bronze-medalist uses Olympics glory to admit he cheated on his girlfriend
The 2026 Winter Olympics are well underway, and Norway is out to an early lead in more departments than one. First, the medal count. No shit, it’s cold there. But they also lead these games with one heartfelt confession of infidelity, an effort no country competing in Milan could match.
Biathlete Johan Olav Botn celebrated his bronze medal at the Olympics by pouring his heart out, apologizing for cheating on his girlfriend of six months:
Norsk OS-intervju tog en oväntad vändning

Efter att ha tagit brons i skidskyttarnas första individuella OS gren, bakom lagkamraten Johan Olav Botn och fransmannen Éric Perrot, stod Sturla Holm Lægreid för en oväntat känslosam intervju.

After winning bronze in the biathletes’ first individual Olympics event, behind teammate Johan Olav Botn and Frenchman Éric Perrot, Sturla Holm Lægreid gave an unexpectedly emotional interview.
The 28-year-old Norwegian hit 19 of 20 targets in the individual race and secured his first individual Olympic medal.
In the interview, he first thanked everyone who had supported him along the way. Then came an unexpected confession.
“There is someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today. Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and was unfaithful, and I told her about it a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life. – NRK
Oof. I don’t even speak Norwegian, and that was a brutal watch. I wasn’t just thinking of him, but of all the Norwegians watching with a collective “huh???”
Imagine being the reporter on the other end of that. You’re expecting some hokey shit like “it’s so great to bring this home for my country” or “this has been a lifelong dream.” It’s the Olympics for crying out loud. Instead, what you got from this guy was anything but.
You’re met with a man pouring his heart out over the airwaves in an act of verbal seppuku to win back the supposed love of his life. Whether or not it’s working is none of your concern in that moment. You’re just waiting for him to stop talking so the interview can end.
I’m not saying she should give him another chance – I haven’t heard all the facts of this case to make a proper ruling – but the fact that he would do this in such a highly visible moment says something. Does it erase his transgressions? Absolutely not. But damn, this is a Hail Mary effort if I’ve ever seen one.
Also, his being 28 years old adds a level of credence to the gesture. This isn’t some lovesick kid crashing out because his frontal lobe is underdeveloped. This is a (somewhat) adult man putting it all on the line on the biggest stage in his sport.
On the flip side, I don’t know how things are in Norway, but I don’t think about biathletes as a group of guys that deal with a lot of female attention. There’s a distinct chance that this was his sole chance to cheat in their six months together, and he took it immediately. Not an easy defense if you ask me.
Now, I could be wrong, though. Norway destroys the Winter Olympics every year. Maybe the guys who sprint in skis and shoot targets pull. Maybe he’s been beating women off with a stick and succumbed to a moment of weakness after one too many aquavits. Not exactly an excuse, but it’s at least a more compelling tale than the guy who hooked up with the first woman who looked at him who wasn’t his girlfriend.
No matter how you slice it, though, doing this at the Olympics is crazy. Of course, the easiest option would have been to keep it in his pants. But, hey, a medal is a medal at the end of the day.

We have all made mistakes before.
