Howard Eskin lashes out on Devan Kaney for her Rhys Hoskins report, says she just made it up

Howard Eskin has never been a legitimate reporter in Philadelphia, but don’t tell him that. He still fancies himself as someone who’s “in the know,” despite currently being unemployed after getting a bit too handsy with a stadium worker at Citizens Bank Park.

And yet, he somehow still carries sway in Philly sports discourse. His son hosts a show on 94WIP, he’s got a podcast where he tries to convince people he knows what he’s talking about, and whenever he takes shots at someone currently at the station, it tends to go viral. That brings us to his latest target: Devan Kaney, the person who effectively replaced Howard Eskin as the Eagles’ sideline reporter.

On Friday, Kaney reported that Bryce Harper went to Dave Dombrowski in an effort to convince him to bring back Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins is a free agent and a fan favorite in Philly, but the fit never really made much sense, which is why Dombrowski ultimately shut the request down.

Roughly 24 hours after that report, Howard Eskin took to Twitter to rip Kaney’s reporting, calling it fake and “total BS.”

No one asked for this, and at this point, no one really cares what Howard Eskin has to say anymore. That much was pretty clear when his tweet pulled in around 140 likes, while Kaney’s response racked up more than 600. Classic.

Calling out a reporter for allegedly making something up is pretty rich coming from Howard. Back in 2004, he was suspended by WIP for 30 days after lying on air about a domestic dispute involving Allen Iverson.

Eskin claimed that Iverson’s attorney, Richard Sprague, had paid a witness to lie in court and spread a false rumor that another witness failed a lie detector test.

He later acknowledged in a written statement that neither claim was true. Eskin admitted he knew no lie detector test had ever taken place, but never corrected the record on his show at the time.

He eventually apologized for waiting more than two years to set the record straight, doing so only after Sprague filed a lawsuit.

Infinity Broadcasting, which owned the station at the time, agreed to pay Sprague substantial compensation, and WIP-AM issued an on-air apology that ran eight times over a four-day period.

So yeah, this one’s pretty cut and dry. It’s tough to call out reporters for making things up when you’ve literally been sued for lying on air at WIP.
