Rick Tocchet

Rick Tocchet needs to shut the fuck up.

Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet is back to business after Team Canada got pantsed in the Olympics and walked away with a silver medal. By business, you’d think I mean coaching. Sadly, I do not. The only business Tocchet deals in is hamstringing the development of Matvei Michkov while simultaneously blaming the kid for it in the media.

Rick Tocchet’s latest nonsensical comments on Michkov have pushed me to this:

“I know he has worked hard, he is a hard worker… I think it is important that we build his confidence level, but also him knowing that it is not just him, it is the whole team. I want him to be comfortable, go out and play, and have fun. But also know there are requirements for a winning organization that you have to do, and I think he knows that.”

Ah, yes. Tell me what you know about winning, I’m dying to know. Two playoff appearances in 10 seasons as a head coach doesn’t exactly scream “winner” to me, but what do I know?

Does playing your best young talent out of position while reducing his role and bashing him consistently equate to winning? I don’t think it does. Neither does using your connections in the media to cover your ass and defend you when things get tough. Unfortunately, Tocchet does it all the same.

Of course, I’m not here to say Michkov is entirely blameless here. The dude showed up to camp overweight and out of shape. Not really what you want out of a future franchise superstar. I was and still am displeased with him over that.

But, guess what. Training camp started on Sept. 16, 2025. I’m no math wizard, but that was 162 days ago.

The Flyers have played 56 games this season, not including the preseason slate. Conditioning is no longer a valid reason for decreased minutes.

So now we come to my biggest problem with Rick Tocchet: he’s a shitty hockey coach and preaches a shitty style of play.

The Flyers front office has given him one of the most creative, intelligent, offensively skilled right-wingers the league has to offer. With the team in a spot where they are clearly not good enough to compete for a championship, you’d think the coach would let him get out there, make mistakes, and develop. Right? RIGHT??????

WRONG. Emphatically so, actually. Tocchet has gone the other direction completely. Let’s put you on the left wing, give you more defensive responsibility, and stick you on the third line with limited ice time. All in the name of “team hockey” and playing the “right way.”

Yeah, I don’t think Tocchet would know what the Right Way to play hockey was if it hit him in the face. The only Right Way he knows is the way Paul Bissonnette gives him a deep tissue rub down while Ryan Whitney gets ready to clean up the oily aftermath. They’re Spittin’ a lot more than just Chiclets, I’ll tell you that much.

I am not a hockey expert like Chris Stumpo and Derek Dunn from The Liberty Yell. I do not have the analytics at my disposal or hockey IQ necessary to fully articulate exactly how ridiculous this shit is.

What I do have is a functioning brain, a set of eyes, and the ability to smell bullshit. Rick Tocchet might be the biggest bullshit artist in recent Philadelphia sports memory.

And, unfortunately for us, we have a hockey media apparatus entirely disinterested in getting to the bottom of this. I don’t know if they’re all just stupid, cowards, complicit, or a combination of the three. What I do know is that they ask Rick Tocchet questions and roll around in his answers like little piggies covered in shit, happy to continue a PR campaign for a bad coach and an even worse organization because he used to play here.

No hard questions are asked, and even if they are, the organization talks out of both sides of its mouth at any given opportunity. It’s genuinely embarassing as a fan that they think we’re this stupid. At the same time, I can’t blame them for thinking that, though.

Just look at the credentialed media representing the fanbase. They’re the ones in a real position to hold the organization accountable, but would rather use their station to cozy up to the coach and GM and condescend to fans in their articles and on social media.

Fortunately, my boys at TLY are the truth tellers of the Flyers community. They see Tocchet for what he is. I am certain I will see them in Valhalla when this is all said and done.

At the end of the day, what Rick Tocchet says is meaningless. He says Grebenkin should get more time, then scratches him. Says he wants Michkov to develop, then treats him like a fourth-line grinder. It’s all nonsense, no matter how you slice it.

So, Rick, the best thing you can do is shut the fuck up. This team isn’t going anywhere, and you’re not doing anything helpful in the locker room or in press conferences. The Flyers, your players, and the people of Philadelphia will thank you.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.

  1. After the Olympics I want to become a fan of the sport of hockey but the Flyers being as bad as they are year after year is making it near damn impossible.
