Pistons Arena Horn Malfunction Detroit

A malfunctioning arena horn stopped the Cavaliers-Pistons game for 12 Minutes and it was pure chaos

The Detroit Pistons were hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers at Little Caesars Arena on Friday night when a power surge in the third quarter triggered an electrical malfunction and sent the overhead horn into a full, nonstop blare.

Not a quick burst. A relentless, deafening, will-not-stop buzzer that refused to quit for nearly 12 minutes while arena staff scrambled to figure out what was happening and how to make it stop.

Pistons arena horn wouldn’t turn off for 12 minutes straight

Players went back to the benches. Then they came back out and warmed up on the court. Workers climbed up to the giant scoreboard to battle the short circuit while everyone in the building sat there listening to this thing go off.

Eventually they cut power to the entire scoreboard, which silenced the horn and earned a standing ovation from a crowd that had been sitting in auditory torture for the better part of a quarter. Play resumed with a manual air horn handling timeout duties. The scoreboard eventually flickered back on. Life went on.

Because that was apparently not enough chaos for one night, a separate delay happened when Cavaliers guard Dennis Schroder pointed out a fan in the stands who was being profane, leading to an ejection from the arena.

So the Pistons and Cavaliers dealt with a broken horn, a rogue scoreboard, a crowd-surfing ejection, and a manual air horn situation, all in the span of one third quarter.

The Pistons won in overtime 122-119, which feels like the most appropriate ending to a game like this. You survive 12 minutes of a broken foghorn and you deserve to win.
