Bryce Harper joins Team USA for the World Baseball Classic after a strong start to Spring Training
Bryce Harper is locked in and the World Baseball Classic has not even started yet.
In four Grapefruit League games before departing for Phoenix on Saturday, Harper is slashing .375 with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs, and three walks.
Four of the six balls he has put in play have been hit at 94.8 mph or harder. The homer he hit Saturday against the Blue Jays left his bat at 93.8 mph. He is seeing pitches, taking his walks, and doing damage when he swings.
For a player heading into his first World Baseball Classic as a big leaguer, that is exactly the timing you want.
Bryce Harper goes YARD:
“Just trying to get pitches in the zone, swing at strikes and take my walks when I can,” Harper said. “I think I’ve done a pretty good job at that the four games I’ve played.”
Harper flew to Phoenix Saturday alongside Kyle Schwarber, Brad Keller, and other Team USA players to join the squad. He has represented the United States twice as an amateur, winning both tournaments, and he is bringing that same mentality into this one.
“When I was younger, we won,” Harper said. “We were undefeated in both tournaments and had some really good teams and some really good pitching and good groups. If we can go out there and do what we need to do, then the possibility to do the same thing is there.”
Team USA opens in Pool B, which is where things immediately get interesting from a Phillies perspective.
Aaron Nola is pitching for Italy. Taijuan Walker is pitching for Mexico. Both of those guys are Harper’s teammates. Team USA could potentially face one or both of them before the tournament is over.
It gets even more interesting from there. Cristopher Sanchez dominated the Blue Jays on Saturday in two innings while Harper was watching from the other dugout.
Sanchez is pitching for the Dominican Republic, and if both teams advance to the semifinals, Harper could be standing in against his own ace.
Bryce Harper had some thoughts on that.
“You better pick and choose what you want to swing at. His stuff is moving all over the plate. He’s definitely one of the best in baseball right now from the left side. So it’d definitely be a tall task.”
And just to complete the full Phillies vs Phillies picture, Jesus Luzardo is on Venezuela’s reserve list and could potentially be added to their roster.
Venezuela and the United States would need to both advance to the championship for that matchup to happen, but the possibility is there.
