Report: Eagles trying to get Jaelan Phillips back on a deal worth above $20 million per year before free agency
The Eagles gave up a third-round pick to acquire Jaelan Phillips at last year’s trade deadline and now they want to keep him. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Philadelphia is attempting to re-sign Jaelan Phillips to a deal worth well above $20 million per year before he ever hits the open market.
Good. Get it done.
Eagles trying to lock up Jaelan Phillies before free agency
Jaelan Phillips came to Philadelphia on the final year of his contract and called the trade one of the best moments of his life. He played 8 games with the Eagles, finished with 73 quarterback pressures (ninth best in the NFL per PFF), and posted a 77.1 pass rush grade on 819 snaps.
Jaelan Phillips is not a pure sack guy but he is a legitimate every-down edge rusher who makes life miserable for opposing offenses and fits exactly what Nick Sirianni and Vic Fangio want on that defense.
Two sacks in eight games is the number that will make people skeptical. Ignore it. Pressures are the better indicator of pass rush effectiveness and 73 of them is a real number. The Eagles knew what they were getting when they traded for him and they clearly liked what they saw.
The complication here is familiar. The Eagles are staring down extensions for Jalen Carter and Moro Ojomo on top of whatever they commit to Phillips. Keeping all three at market rate is going to require some serious cap creativity from Howie Roseman. He has done it before.
Report: Teams have called the Eagles about a potential Jalen Carter trade
Jaelan Phillips has a strong market coming and the Eagles know it. The fact that they are moving to get this done before free agency opens Monday is the right call. You do not let a guy who fits your system, loves playing here, and generates that kind of pressure walk out the door to find out what he is worth somewhere else.
