Eagles add veteran TE Johnny Mundt on 1-year deal

The Eagles continued adding depth Tuesday, agreeing to terms with veteran tight end Johnny Mundt on a one-year deal, according to Mike Garafolo. Mundt was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this week after spending the 2025 season with the team.

It’s not exactly a splashy move, but it’s a very Eagles-type signing. Mundt has carved out a long NFL career as a dependable blocking tight end, the kind of player coaches love when they want to run the ball and keep things clean in the trenches. He’s not going to put up huge receiving numbers, but that’s not really why he’s here.

Eagles Continue Tweaking the Roster

The Eagles have quietly started to shape their roster during the early stages of free agency. Just earlier Tuesday, the team also agreed to a one-year deal with cornerback Riq Woolen, adding another high-upside defensive back to pair with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

Now they’ve addressed the tight end room with Mundt, a move that gives the offense a veteran presence who can handle the dirty work in the run game.

At the moment, Mundt profiles as more of a depth addition than anything else. He’s a reliable blocker who can play snaps in heavier formations, contribute on special teams, and give the offense flexibility when they want to lean into their power run looks.

This Doesn’t Mean the Eagles Are Done at Tight End

The immediate reaction from some fans might be that this signals the Eagles are moving on from Dallas Goedert. That’s probably jumping the gun.

Mundt isn’t a replacement for Goedert. If anything, he fills a completely different role. Goedert is still one of the better all-around tight ends in football and a major piece of the passing game when healthy.

Adding a veteran blocker like Mundt could just as easily be about rounding out the room rather than replacing anyone. The Eagles have always liked carrying tight ends who can handle the physical side of the position, especially in an offense that still leans heavily on the run game and play-action.

Classic Eagles Depth Move

At the end of the day, this is the kind of move the Eagles make all the time. It’s not flashy, it won’t dominate ESPN’s free agency coverage, and most fans outside of Philadelphia probably won’t even notice it.

But the Eagles love players who know their role and execute it well. Mundt fits that mold perfectly.

Between the addition of Woolen on defense and Mundt on offense, the Eagles are starting to quietly fill in the edges of the roster. It may not look like much right now, but this is usually how Howie Roseman operates early in the offseason — small moves that set the stage for bigger ones down the line.
