Flyers get kicked in the teeth by the Rangers, lose 6-2 in South Philly
The Flyers got blown out 6-2 by the New York Rangers last night in South Philly. The Rangers, for context, are 25-30-8 and sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference.
That is not great.
New York led 3-0 after the first period and 6-1 after the second.
Dan Vladar, who has been the Flyers’ best player for most of this season and is carrying the heaviest workload of his career, surrendered six goals on 24 shots including three power play goals. Samuel Ersson replaced him to start the third period.
Matvei Michkov and Sean Couturier scored the Flyers’ goals.
Couturier did not sugarcoat it afterward. “We pissed away a game here tonight in front of him. Didn’t help him at all. We were just awful.”
He is right. Vladar has carried this team all year. Jamie Drysdale called him probably the Flyers’ best player over the course of the season and said the team would not even be in this conversation without him.
Monday night the skaters in front of him were loose in their defensive zone coverages, gave up three power play goals, and left their goalie completely exposed. That is on the group. Vladdy deserved better.
Travis Konecny returned after missing three games with an upper-body injury and Nick Seeler came back after two games out as well. Konecny set up several chances for Alex Bump, who had four shots two days after scoring in his NHL debut.
The bad news is Konecny also took a holding penalty that led to Gabe Perreault’s power play goal and put the game completely out of reach at 4-1 just as Michkov had trimmed it to 3-1.
The Flyers are 29-23-11 and missed a chance to move within five points of the second wild card spot. The playoff window is still open but games like Monday are a reminder that this team is young and inconsistent and still has a real gap between where they are and where they need to be to win in April.
Wednesday they host the Capitals. Respond or go quietly. Simple as that.
