Make no mistake, the night of March 10th belongs to Cam Payne and Cam Payne ONLY
March 10th belongs to Cameron Payne and he is not letting anyone forget it.
The Sixers beat the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night and the story of the game was Payne, who scored 32 points and went a perfect 8-for-8 from three-point range.
A high-volume, perfect night from deep. Incredible.
For a guy who was signed recently and had been grinding through a rough stretch filling in for Tyrese Maxey, it was about as good a performance as you could ask for.
Cam Payne might be the greatest basketball player…ever
The only problem is that Bam Adebayo scored 83 points in a blowout win over the Washington Wizards the same night, which is the kind of historic performance that swallows every other story in the NBA whole.
Disgusting: Bam Adebayo stat-pads his way to 83 points as Heat foul up 25 to keep feeding him
Cam Payne was not having it.
“I was worried about Cam Payne, honestly,” Payne said, referring to himself in third person, which is the correct energy for a night like this. “Bam can’t take my night. March 10, it’s all me.”
Cam Payne is right. March 10 is his night. Bam can have every other night.
The win itself came with an asterisk. The Grizzlies were in control for most of the game before pulling their starters in the fourth quarter in a completely blatant tanking effort, at which point Philadelphia went on a 20-2 run and took the game. A win is a win but let’s be honest about what happened there.
The broader Sixers situation remains grim. Maxey is out for at least three weeks after injuring his hand against the Hawks. Embiid is still out with the oblique. Paul George is still serving his suspension.
The team has fallen into Play-In territory and is counting down the days until someone healthy comes back. Thursday they are on the road in Detroit, which is another difficult game with a makeshift roster.
But tonight, for a few hours, Cameron Payne went 8-for-8 from three and claimed his night. That is something. March 10, it’s all him.
