Eagles buy more time with Dallas Goedert as contract void date gets pushed back
The Eagles and Dallas Goedert might not be headed for a breakup after all.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Zach Berman, the void date on Goedert’s contract has officially been pushed back from March 10 to March 13. It’s a procedural move, but it’s an important one. The extra time gives both sides a window to continue negotiating a contract extension that would keep the veteran tight end in Philadelphia.
Nothing is finalized yet, but the fact that the deadline was moved suggests the Eagles and Goedert still have interest in figuring something out.
Eagles Still Have a Path to Keep Dallas Goedert
The Eagles clearly aren’t ready to slam the door on bringing Goedert back.
If the contract had simply voided on its original date, the situation would’ve moved much closer to an outright split. Instead, this extension signals that the team is at least open to working out a new deal — and from a roster standpoint, that makes a lot of sense.
Goedert has been one of the most reliable pieces of the Eagles’ offense for years. Even with the offense evolving around him, he’s remained a dependable target over the middle and a key part of the team’s blocking scheme in the run game.
Replacing that combination isn’t easy.
The Tight End Market Might Be Helping the Eagles
Another factor working in the Eagles’ favor is the current tight end market, which hasn’t exactly been exploding with massive deals.
Cade Otton reportedly signed a three-year contract worth $30 million, while Chig Okonkwo landed a deal averaging roughly $10 million per year. Those numbers don’t exactly reset the market, and they might not give Goedert the kind of leverage he was hoping for.
For context, Goedert made $10 million last season after taking a pay cut from $14 million. If the market is settling in around that range, it may make sense for both sides to meet somewhere in the middle rather than forcing a split.
From the Eagles’ perspective, bringing Goedert back at a reasonable number would allow them to maintain continuity at a position that hasn’t been a concern for years.
Time Is Ticking
The new deadline gives the Eagles and Goedert until Friday to figure things out.
That’s not a lot of time, but it’s enough to signal that negotiations are still alive. And if we’ve learned anything about this front office over the years, it’s that Howie Roseman rarely makes these kinds of procedural moves unless there’s at least a realistic path to a deal.
For now, the door remains open.
And if the Eagles can find a way to keep Dallas Goedert in Philadelphia without breaking the bank, it would quietly solve one of the more underrated questions hanging over this roster.
