Eagles add veteran CB Jonathan Jones on 1-year deal
The Eagles added another piece to their secondary Thursday night, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones, according to multiple reports.
Eagles add more depth to their cornerback room
Jones, 32, brings plenty of experience to Philadelphia. The 10-year NFL veteran spent the majority of his career with the New England Patriots before playing last season with the Washington Commanders, where he appeared in 12 games and recorded 41 tackles and five pass breakups.
While the Eagles already appear set at the top of the depth chart, with Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and newly signed Riq Woolen expected to handle the starting roles, Jones gives the team another versatile defensive back capable of playing both outside corner and in the slot.
Realistically, this move is more about depth and competition than anything else. Jones will likely be battling with players like Michael Carter, Kelee Ringo, Jakorian Bennett, and Mac McWilliams for a roster spot and playing time as the Eagles sort out the back end of their secondary.
There’s also a coaching connection worth noting. Eagles secondary coach Mike Pellegrino previously worked with Jones in New England, coaching him for six seasons while serving as the Patriots’ cornerbacks coach from 2019 to 2024.
It may not be the flashiest signing of the offseason, but it fits the Eagles’ approach of loading up on defensive backs and letting competition sort things out. And if nothing else, Jones gives them another experienced option in a room that’s suddenly getting pretty crowded.
