Riq Woolen’s contract is another Howie Roseman masterclass
Last week, the Eagles signed Pro Bowl corner Riq Woolen to a one-year deal worth up to $15 million. A pretty steep price tag for a one year stint, but now that we have the official cap numbers of the deal, it’s obvious that this is another Howie Roseman masterclass.
Thanks to four extra void years on the contract — a Roseman specialty — Woolen will only account for $3.4M against the cap this year, per OverTheCap
Riq Woolen’s cap numbers broken down:
| Year | Age | Base Salary | Prorated Signing Bonus | Cap Number | Cap % | Dead Money Cut (pre-June 1) |
Cap Savings Cut (pre-June 1) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 27 | $6,000,000 | $2,148,000 | $3,408,000 | 1.1% | $10,740,000 | ($7,332,000) |
| 2027 | 28 | Void | $2,148,000 | $8,592,000 | 2.6% | $8,592,000 | $0 |
| 2028 | 29 | Void | $2,148,000 | $0 | 0.0% | $6,444,000 | ($6,444,000) |
| 2029 | 30 | Void | $2,148,000 | $0 | — | $4,296,000 | ($4,296,000) |
| 2030 | 31 | Void | $2,148,000 | $0 | — | $2,148,000 | ($2,148,000) |
| Total | $6,000,000 | $10,740,000 | $12,000,000 |
I’ll never pretend to know what kind of magic Howie Roseman sprinkles into these contracts to make them work. I’m also not going to complain about it.
Along with Riq Woolen’s deal, the Eagles have been restructuring a few in-house contracts to keep as much cap space open as possible. Landon Dickerson recently reworked his deal by removing a year from the end of it. Michael Carter also restructured his contract, significantly lowering his cap hit.
