Eagles add Dameon Pierce as low-risk RB depth ahead of camp
Eagles fans looking for a splash move aren’t going to find it here, but that doesn’t mean this signing is meaningless.
Philadelphia has agreed to terms with running back Dameon Pierce, a former Texans fourth-round pick who flashed early in his career before falling off the map. This is exactly the type of move the Eagles make this time of year: cheap, low-risk, and built purely around competition.
Eagles Backfield Adds Competition, Not a Guarantee
The Birds aren’t handing Pierce anything. He’s walking into a crowded running back room and will have to earn his spot the hard way.
This team typically carries four running backs, and with AJ Dillon out the door, there was an opening for another body. Pierce fills that gap, but more importantly, he gives the Eagles another lottery ticket.
If he looks anything like the guy who rushed for 939 yards as a rookie, great. If not, he’s an easy cut and the Birds move on without blinking.
There’s a Reason Pierce Was Available
Let’s not pretend this is some hidden gem the league missed.
Pierce’s career has gone:
- Strong rookie year
- Sharp regression
- Waived
- Practice squad bounce
That’s not nothing. There’s a reason he was sitting there for the Eagles to scoop up.
But at the same time, running back is one of the easiest positions to revive in the right system. And if there’s one thing the Eagles do well, it’s getting value out of depth pieces.
This is a classic Eagles move. No headlines, no risk, just stacking competition and letting camp sort it out.
Best case: Pierce gives them real depth or even earns a role. Worst case: he doesn’t make the team and nobody cares.
Either way, it costs them nothing, and that’s the whole point.
