Relax: Reed Blankenship isn’t taking a shot at the Eagles, he’s explaining what free agency meant to him

Reed Blankenship has a lot of Eagles fans raising an eyebrow after his recent comments about joining the Texans, but let’s slow down for a second, this isn’t a guy throwing shade at Philadelphia.

It’s actually the opposite.

If you listen to how Reed Blankenship explained it on his podcast, this wasn’t about disrespecting the Eagles. It was about experiencing something he’s literally never had before in his football life.

Reed Blankenship Finally Got His “Draft Moment”

Here’s the part people are missing.

Reed Blankenship came into the league as an undrafted free agent. There was no draft call. No team picking him and saying “we want you.” No real recruiting process where multiple teams are competing for his services.

He had to earn everything the hard way.

So when he says Houston was the first time he felt like a team truly “wanted” him, he’s not saying the Eagles didn’t value him. He’s saying this was the first time in his career where teams were actually lining up to get him.

That’s free agency.

For most players, that moment comes when they’re 21 years old on draft night. For Reed Blankenship, it came years later after grinding his way from UDFA to team captain.

That’s a completely different perspective.

This Isn’t a Shot at the Eagles

Let’s be clear, the Eagles developed Reed Blankenship into what he is today.

  • Undrafted in 2022
  • Starter by Year 2
  • Key piece on a Super Bowl defense
  • Voted team captain

That doesn’t happen if an organization doesn’t believe in you.

And the Eagles even extended him in 2024. That’s not a team ignoring a player, that’s a team investing in him.

So when Reed Blankenship talks about feeling “wanted” in Houston, it’s not a comparison meant to tear Philly down. It’s a reflection of a completely different experience, one where he finally got recruited instead of just making a roster.

Reed Blankenship’s Comments Are About Perspective, Not Philly

There’s a difference between being kept and being pursued.

With the Eagles, Reed Blankenship earned everything. He forced his way onto the field, into the starting lineup, and eventually into a leadership role.

In free agency, especially coming off that kind of résumé, the dynamic flips. Teams are calling you. Teams are pitching you. Teams are trying to sell you on their vision.

That’s what he’s talking about.

And for a guy who never had that coming out of college, it’s going to hit different.

At the end of the day, this isn’t some dramatic breakup.

The Eagles built Reed Blankenship into a legitimate NFL starter and leader. The Texans offered him a new opportunity and a new experience, one that felt like a full-circle moment for a former UDFA.

Both things can be true.

And if anything, his comments reinforce just how far he’s come. He went from a guy hoping to stick on a roster to a player teams are actively chasing in free agency.

That’s not a shot at the Eagles.

That’s a success story.
