Eagles add athletic TE depth with Stone Smartt signing
Eagles continue to stack the margins of the roster, this time adding tight end Stone Smartt on a one-year deal.
Smartt isn’t some splash move, but that’s not the point. He’s a former quarterback turned tight end who brings legit athleticism to a room that’s already crowded but still very much up for grabs behind Dallas Goedert.
Eagles bolster tight end competition
The Birds now have a full-on competition brewing at tight end. Goedert is the clear TE1, but behind him it’s a mix of role players and developmental pieces. Smartt fits right into that second group.
Over 53 career games, he’s put up modest production — 38 catches for 432 yards and a touchdown — but the intrigue is in the profile. A 6’4” athlete who ran a 4.62 and is still relatively new to the position? That’s exactly the type of upside swing this front office loves.

The Eagles aren’t asking him to come in and be a difference-maker right away. They’re asking him to compete, contribute on the margins, and maybe develop into something more if it clicks.
Low-risk move, familiar Eagles thinking
This is classic Eagles roster building. Cheap, athletic, and moldable.
If Smartt flashes, great. If not, they move on without thinking twice. That’s how you build depth without screwing up your cap or your flexibility.
At the very least, he adds another body to a tight end room that’s going to sort itself out in camp. And if he turns into anything more than that, it’s a win.
