Owen Tippett hat trick in Detroit keeps Flyers playoff push front and center with 10 games remaining

Owen Tippett scored three goals Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena and the Flyers beat the Red Wings 5-3 in one of the most important wins of their season. This was not just a two-point game. This was a statement against one of the exact teams they are chasing in the wild card race and they dominated for most of it.

Tippett now has a team-high 27 goals and has been the best player on this roster over the past month. His hat trick was capped by a spectacular rush up the ice on the power play in the third period that pushed the lead to 4-0.

The Owen Tippett Show in Detroit:

Detroit then went on a furious push and cut it to one with under four minutes remaining, trimming three goals in about two and a half minutes to make things uncomfortable. Couturier buried an empty netter from long distance to seal it. Tippett assisted on the goal to finish with four points on the night.

Noah Cates added the other goal, his 17th of the season and a new career high. The Flyers are now 25-5-2 when Cates records a point. That is not a coincidence. He makes this team better every time he contributes.

The Flyers have now gone 11-3-1 over their last 15 games while allowing just 2.27 goals per game in that stretch. They have scored ten goals over their last two outings between the 5-1 win over the Blackhawks on Thursday and this one.

The momentum is real and the timing is right. Whether they have enough time to sneak inside the playoffs is the real question. The Blue Jackets lost in regulation on Saturday night which means the Flyers climbed to within three points of the second wild card spot.

They are also now within four points of Pittsburgh for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Two points behind Detroit after beating Detroit. Three back of the wild card. Ten games left.

They are undoubtedly making this interesting.

The Flyers are right back at it Sunday at home against the 44-18-11 Dallas Stars at 7 PM ET on NBCSP. The Stars are one of the best teams in the West and the Flyers are playing the second night of a back-to-back.

Last season they were 1-10-2 in that situation.

This year they are 5-5-1. It is winnable. It has to be.
