ESPN’s proposed Eagles draft trade is exactly the kind of chaos Howie Roseman would consider

The Eagles never miss one of these conversations because Howie Roseman is physically incapable of sitting still when there’s an elite defensive lineman on the table. So when ESPN cooked up an all-trades mock draft and sent Maxx Crosby to Philadelphia, it immediately passed the first test of fake trade season: it sounded just realistic enough to make people lose their minds.

According to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, the proposed deal would have the Eagles receive Crosby while the Raiders get pick No. 23, a 2027 third-round pick, and Nolan Smith Jr. back in return. That is a real swing, but it is also exactly the kind of move that gets attached to Roseman every offseason because he has built a reputation on hunting premium talent in the trenches.

Eagles and Maxx Crosby is the most Howie Roseman fake trade ever

Barnwell basically says the quiet part out loud. “With a predilection for trades and an affinity for elite defensive linemen, Howie Roseman’s Eagles have always been on the fringes of the Crosby sweepstakes.” That’s the whole story right there. If there is a star pass rusher floating around in trade rumors, the Eagles are going to get mentioned whether the thing is realistic or not.

And Barnwell’s logic from the Raiders side is at least understandable. He writes, “Vegas doesn’t appear to be close to seriously contending. Crosby turns 29 in August. He wants to win, ideally sooner rather than later.” That’s the case for why Las Vegas would even entertain something like this in the first place. If the Raiders think their timeline is off, then flipping Crosby for picks plus a younger edge player is not crazy on paper.

From the Eagles side, the appeal is obvious. Crosby is a monster. You are not drafting a player at 23 who is likely to become Maxx Crosby. You would be trading projection for production and dropping a proven wrecking ball into a defense that already wants to beat the life out of people up front.

Eagles would be buying the upgrade, not the long-term comfort

The biggest thing ESPN points to is money, and that’s where this gets messy. Barnwell notes that Philly is already spending heavily on offense and says, “The issue is money. Philly is spending a whopping $219 million on its offense this season, and though the defense comes in at just over $86 million, those figures will change in the years to come.” He then points out the obvious pressure points: Jordan Davis just got paid, Jalen Carter is probably next, and Quinyon Mitchell plus Cooper DeJean are eventually going to cost real money too.

That’s the part people skip when they play fantasy GM. The Eagles can make almost anything work in the short term because Roseman knows how to move money around better than most of the league. But eventually the bill comes due, and this roster already has a lot of future invoices stacking up.

Then there is Nolan Smith. Barnwell says the Eagles “still have high hopes for Smith,” but because his fifth-year option decision is coming up, “this might be a natural time to consider a move.” That’s fair analysis, even if it would sting a little. Crosby is the better player right now, and Barnwell flat-out says he “would step in as a major upgrade over Smith.” That’s not an insult. That’s just reality.

Still, moving Smith would mean the Eagles are cashing out on a younger, cheaper edge rusher for a more expensive veteran who turns 29 in August. That is a win-now decision, not a comfort-food roster-building decision.

Eagles fans should understand what this really is

This is not a report. It is not sourced intel. It is not ESPN saying the Eagles are on the phone finalizing a deal. Barnwell himself framed the whole exercise as a trade-only mock draft that was meant to be “ridiculous and absurd.” So let’s not act like Maxx Crosby is already house hunting on the Main Line.

What it is, though, is a believable thought exercise. The Eagles value elite defensive linemen. Roseman has never been afraid to make a bold move. Crosby is good enough to justify the conversation. That’s why this one has juice.

Would I be shocked if the Eagles explored something like this? No. Would I be shocked if they actually pulled the trigger at that price with the cap and future extensions looming? Also no, but I’d understand why they hesitated.

That’s the sweet spot of this whole thing. It’s not nonsense, but it’s also not some flashing neon sign that a trade is coming. It’s just ESPN looking at Howie Roseman, looking at Maxx Crosby, and doing the easiest football math on earth: star pass rusher plus aggressive GM equals offseason chaos. And honestly, with the Eagles, that’s usually a pretty safe bet.
