Victor Wembanyama exits Game 2 with a concussion after nasty faceplant, and the timing could not be worse

Victor Wembanyama entered Tuesday’s Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers having just been handed the Defensive Player of the Year trophy during pregame warmups. The first unanimous DPOY in league history wound up exiting the game early after a nasty faceplant.

Victor Wembanyama exits Game 2 in concussion protocol after a scary fall:

NBA protocol mandates at least 48 hours before he can even get going again, which already clouds his availability for Game 3 in Portland on Friday. The average recovery time for a concussion runs somewhere between 7 and 10 days, which puts a best-case return around Game 5 and a worst-case around Game 7. That’s a brutal range.

To review what’s at stake here: Wembanyama dropped 35 points in Game 1 on Sunday, the most by any Spurs player in a playoff debut in franchise history. He came into Tuesday as an MVP finalist. He’s the best player on a team making its first postseason appearance since 2019. And he’s essentially the face of the league, even if he doesn’t have all the accolades to merit that yet.

Granted, the Spurs went 2-1 against Portland in the regular season in games Wembanyama sat out. They’re not without options. But there’s a massive difference between managing without him during a Tuesday night in February and managing without him in an elimination scenario against a team that has nothing to lose.

Plus, there’s the injury-prone narrative that can come into play here. Obviously, this is a freak accident, but being a 76ers fan, nobody cares about that, no matter how good you are.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.
