Pete Crow-Armstrong told a female fan to suck his d-ck after dropping a fly ball and honestly I respect the energy
Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong missed a leaping catch in the fifth inning against the White Sox on Sunday at Rate Field. A ball hit by Miguel Vargas went off his glove and he hit the ground.
A female fan standing behind the barrier in the outfield immediately started heckling him. Crow-Armstrong’s response, captured on video that went viral within minutes, was to tell her to “suck my fucking dick, bitch.”
Pete Crow-Armstrong…
I know the internet outraged about this but…
Spare me the whole “professional athletes shouldn’t talk shit to fans” thing. That’s probably true. If this was a dude, it would have been a funny video that social media chewed up and spit out in a 24-hour news cycle. Since it was a female and you have some faceless account that goes by “Nate” posting it and tagging MLB and the Cubs while going viral, now it becomes something that it’s really not.
That said, I literally don’t care. That video is hilarious and the edits are going to be amazing. I already saw a few before I picked up the actual context of the story so I’m sure you’ll run into them while you’re doomscrolling.
Fact: Pete Crow-Armstrong got heckled immediately
He didn’t drop a routine fly ball in the ninth inning of a playoff game. He made a leaping attempt at a ball that was hit well, came up short, and hit the ground. Before he could even get the grass off his uniform, some lady behind the barrier started talking shit.
That’s showbiz baby. Keep your mouth shut unless you want a response. That goes for dudes too but again, this wasn’t a story if it was a dude.
Pete Crow-Armstrong confirmed it after the game. “She decided to start talking shit and I felt the need to say it back.” That’s an honest answer. Was the word choice bad? Obviously. He admitted that himself on Monday. Said he was “bummed out about the word choice” and that kids are going to find their way to the video on social media. He apologized for the language specifically.
Pete Crow-Armstrong is bummed…lol
No one cares about the impulse, I guess?
The impulse was pure. You’re a 23-year-old professional athlete who just slammed into the outfield wall and ate dirt trying to make a play and some random person is screaming at you from three feet away.
The human reaction is to say something back. Most players internalize it and walk away. Pete Crow-Armstrong chose violence. Verbal violence, but violence nonetheless.
Pete Crow-Armstrong yells at everyone
Crow-Armstrong already picked a fight with Dodgers fans earlier this year. Now he’s got White Sox fans coming for him too. The kid is collecting enemies across Major League Baseball at an impressive rate for someone who is only 23 years old and has been an All-Star exactly once. Most players don’t start beefing with fanbases until they’ve been in the league for a decade. Crow-Armstrong is speedrunning it.
MLB has fined other players for getting obscene with fans and Pete Crow-Armstrong is certainly going to join that list.
Not much Pete Crow-Armstrong can do there, ya know? That’s just the cost of doing business when you tell someone to suck your dick on camera at a Major League Baseball game.
The fine will be a few thousand dollars. The video will live on the internet forever. Pete Crow-Armstrong will be heckled about it at every road stadium this season because more fans will want to get under his skin. That’s the trade-off.
The apology above was unnecessary but fine
Pete Crow-Armstrong said he regretted the word choice. He acknowledged that kids will see the video. He didn’t backtrack on the fact that the fan was heckling him and he responded.
That’s about the best you can ask for in an apology for telling someone to suck your dick at a baseball game. He’s not pretending it didn’t happen. He’s not blaming anyone else. He’s just saying the words were wrong even if the frustration was understandable.
For the record, if you heckle a professional athlete from three feet away after he just ate dirt on a missed catch, you should be prepared for whatever comes back your way.
The barrier between the stands and the field is not a force field that protects you from consequences. You talked shit. He talked shit back. His shit was worse than yours. That’s the risk you took when you opened your mouth.
