Sean Mannion actually sounds like he has a plan for Jalen Hurts and Eagles offense

Sean Mannion finally spoke to Eagles media on Thursday.

The good news is Mannion at least sounds like a real offensive coordinator. That alone is a refreshing change after watching last year’s offense did irreversible damage to my mental stability.

Sean Mannion did not sit there and hand out actual scheme details because no coach with a functioning brain is doing that in May. But he did give enough to understand what he wants this Eagles offense to look like.

Versatile. Detailed. Built around timing. Built around rhythm. Built around the players.

That last part is the big one. The Eagles do not need some genius trying to prove he is the smartest guy in the room. They need someone who looks at Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, Makai Lemon, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and that offensive line and says, “Maybe we should make life hell for defenses with all of this.”

Crazy concept, I know.

Sean Mannion Knows This Has To Start With Jalen Hurts

Sean Mannion had nothing but praise for Jalen Hurts. He said Hurts has been great to work with, called him accurate, praised his arm strength, talked about his athleticism, and said he can do anything the Eagles ask of him.

That is exactly what you want to hear.

It is also funny how fast the “Jalen Hurts is difficult” noise disappears the second Kevin Patullo is no longer in the building. Weird how that works. Almost like the offense looked broken because the offense was broken, not because the quarterback forgot how to play football.

Sean Mannion talked about Hurts asking thoughtful questions, attacking fundamentals, staying after practice, and wanting more work. That sounds a little different than the national media fan fiction we heard all offseason.

The Eagles do not need Hurts to become someone else. They need an offense that lets him be the best version of himself again. Let him play in rhythm. Let him use his legs. Let him punish defenses when they overcommit. Let him throw to actual stars instead of making every drive feel like a hostage negotiation.

Mannion also mentioned Hurts’ running ability, which should make every Eagles fan sit up a little bit. The Eagles treated that part of his game like a forbidden artifact last season. Nobody wants Hurts taking 14 designed runs a game in September, but pretending his legs are not one of the biggest stress points in football is stupid.

Use it. Be smart about it. Make defenses account for it.

That is the whole point.

The Eagles Offense Needs Rhythm Again

The most interesting thing Sean Mannion said was about timing. He talked about how routes have to marry together and how quarterbacks have to listen to their feet. When the footwork is right and the timing is right, the ball should want to come out.

Beautiful. Actual offense. We used to pray for times like this.

Last year, too much of the Eagles offense felt disconnected. Routes looked crowded. Concepts felt stale. Hurts had too many snaps where he was waiting, drifting, resetting, and trying to create something out of mud.

That cannot happen again.

This offense has too much talent to look constipated. There is no excuse for AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith to feel like expensive decorations for long stretches. There is no excuse for Hurts to be stuck in obvious passing situations because the early-down offense wasted everyone’s time. There is no excuse for defenses to sit on the same stuff every week.

Mannion does not have to reinvent football. He just has to make the Eagles hard to defend again.

With this roster, that should not be some impossible task.

Sean Mannion Has The Pieces

Mannion also talked up Makai Lemon, the wide receiver room, Ryan Mahaffey, Chris Kuper, and the offensive line. That all sounds nice in May. Everyone is in the best shape of their life. Every assistant coach is a great teacher. Every rookie is tough and smart and ready to contribute.

Still, the bigger point stands.

The Eagles have pieces everywhere. They have a quarterback who has won a lot of football games. They have one of the best receiver duos in the league. They have a monster run game. They have a line that should still be a strength. They have enough talent to make most offensive coordinators look competent.

Now Sean Mannion has to actually do it.

And honestly, he does not need to be perfect. He just needs to bring some structure back. Give Hurts answers. Use motion with a purpose. Build easy throws into the offense. Make defenses defend the whole field. Stop making every third down feel like a federal investigation.

That is the bar.

After last year, it is not exactly on the moon.

Sean Mannion sounded prepared. He sounded normal. He sounded like someone who understands that the Eagles offense should be built around Jalen Hurts, not around whatever weird stubborn nonsense we watched last season.

Now he has to prove it.

Because the Eagles do not need more press conference optimism. They need an offense that looks dangerous again. They need Hurts back in rhythm. They need AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith fed like actual elite weapons. They need the run game and pass game working together instead of taking turns annoying everyone.

Sean Mannion says he wants to be versatile, evolve, and maximize his players.

Great.

Now go do it.
