Spears of Andscape, Ben Simmons is expected to be a full participant with “zero restrictions” at a player-led Australian men’s national team mini-camp in Melbourne starting Monday. For a guy whose entire career has been derailed by injuries, “zero restrictions” might be the two most important words in that entire report.

A coach who recently worked Simmons out said he’s regained his athleticism. Simmons himself told Andscape that this is the best he’s felt in years. And he cared enough to pay his own way to this camp in Melbourne, which tells you something about where his head is at.

That’s a big deal. The knock on Ben Simmons was never talent, it was availability and the physical breakdown. Ben Simmons isn’t lacking for suitors so lets hope the Sixers are at the top of the list.

Per Spears, several NBA teams have already expressed interest to his camp, including one Western Conference squad that offered a training camp invite. Simmons is also open to signing a veteran’s minimum contract, which is exactly the kind of low-risk deal that makes him accessible to a contender.

This is the part that matters for Philadelphia. The market for Simmons is heating up, which means if the Sixers actually want to make this reunion happen, they can’t sit around forever. Other teams are circling. A healthy, motivated Ben Simmons on a minimum deal is a genuine value, and the Sixers aren’t the only franchise that can see it.

The Sixers Fit Still Makes Too Much Sense

The vision Rich Paul laid out of Simmons reinventing himself as a rolling, playmaking five is right there for the taking.

The only real hurdle remains the cap situation, with the Sixers sitting just below the first apron, but as I’ve said, that’s a solvable problem for a motivated organization willing to do a little reshuffling. Now that Ben Simmons is showing he’s healthy and drawing interest, the urgency to solve it goes up.

The Olympic Dream Adds Another Layer

There’s an interesting subplot here too. Simmons has dreams of playing for Australia at the 2028 LA Olympics, and attending this mini-camp is part of keeping that hope alive. That’s the sign of a guy who’s genuinely motivated, who’s not ready to fade away, and who has real goals still driving him.
