Phillies Comeback: “99.5% ain’t 100%”

There’s a number floating around from Sunday’s game that perfectly captures just how insane this comeback was, and I can’t stop thinking about it. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals had a 99.5% win probability.

The Phillies were cooked, done, a mathematical afterthought but here’s the thing about that number. Baseball is nine innings and 27 outs. 99.5% ain’t 100% and this team, riding all the magic in the world right now, found a way into that last little sliver.

The Phillies had done absolutely nothing all afternoon, managing just four hits through eight innings and looking completely lifeless against St. Louis All-Star closer Riley O’Brien.

They were down to their last strike THREE separate times in that ninth inning. Three times, one strike away from the streak dying and everyone going home. The win probability said it was over. The scoreboard said it was over. Everything said it was over.

Except that half a percent. That tiny, stubborn 0.5% that this team decided to live in.

Bryce Harper led off with a double to keep a faint pulse. Two quick outs followed, and it looked finished. But then the Phillies refused to make that final out. Four straight hits and a walk, all with two outs, all against a good closer.

Edmundo Sosa cleared the bases with a three-run double to flip the whole thing. Bryan De La Cruz tied it with a clutch base knock. Then, with the ballpark completely unglued, Kyle Schwarber did what Schwarber does, launching a walk-off homer to dead center for his MLB-leading 39th to win it 6-4.

Six two-out runs. Down to the last strike three times. Out of a 99.5% hole. That’s not a comeback, that’s a heist.

This is the whole beauty of baseball, and it’s the whole beauty of what this team is right now. The math had them dead to rights. The percentages had all but closed the book.

None of it mattered, because 99.5% still leaves a crack, and this Phillies team is playing with the kind of belief that finds that crack and kicks the door down. That’s nine straight wins now, the longest of the season, and their third consecutive series sweep.

When you can crawl out of a 99.5% grave, down to your last strike three separate times, against an All-Star closer, that’s when you start to wonder if something special is brewing. A month ago this team looked buried and now they’re pulling off miracles the analytics say shouldn’t happen.

Never tell the Phillies the odds. 99.5% ain’t 100%, and right now, that half a percent is all they need.
