Philadelphia Union Lose 2-1, Knocked Out in the Semi-Finals

The Philadelphia Union took the field tonight in the Semi-Final round and it looked like they didn’t come ready to play. Poor play all around from the Union isn’t going to cut it, especially in the Semi-Finals. The Union tried to come back but it was too late.

First Half:

Just 12 minutes in, Portland took the lead off a Jeremy Ebobisse header which is his fourth goal of the tournament.

The Union had a couple of chances to equalize and in the 45th minute, they were awarded a penalty kick. The kick was taken by Sergio Santos who missed high right over the bar. Portland head into the first half with a 1-0 lead.

Second Half:

After a huge missed opportunity to tie the game at the end of the half, the Union hoped to come out and put one on the board. In the 69th minute, Sebastian Blanco scored off a corner kick. After this goal, Blanco now has 3 goals and 5 assists in the tournament.

Union goalie Andre Blake played a fantastic game but unfortunately, his teammates couldn’t return him any favors. The Timbers had chances after this to go up 3-0 but couldn’t find the back of the net. Finally, in the 85th minute, the Union showed some life. Following a Union free-kick that was deflected by the goalie, Andrew Wooten tapped one in and cut the lead to 2-1.

The Union were too late to make a comeback and couldn’t force the game to extra time and penalty kicks. After making some noise in the tournament, they are officially eliminated and are leaving the bubble. The Union will take the field again for the regular season and we will know the schedule in the coming weeks.
