Sixers Waive Dakota Mathias

The Sixers waived Dakota Mathias yesterday, ruining my day in the process (pun intended). The 25 year old 2-way guard played in only eight games for the team, but was able to make an impact nonetheless. Mathias was more than likely going to phased out of rotations once the team was able to get healthy, so it does make sense to see him being moved.
After a week where Mathias was able to collect minutes, his play wasn’t exactly exceptional and looking at the rest of the roster, there isn’t much of a place for him with the emergence of Isiah Joe, Furkan’s comeback, and Matisse Thybulle’s improved play. Although, Mathias might have given me my greatest Twitter moment to date, so for that I am eternally grateful.
By moving Mathias, they only clear up a 2-Way spot, rather than a regular roster spot, which makes this move interesting. This doesn’t mean that the player they sign has to be from the G League, but it does mean that whoever they sign will have to be on a 2-Way contract. There are inherently some speculations around this action, especially given that Kevin Porter Jr was made available today after an altercation, but they would have to make an entirely different deal to get him to Philadelphia.
The Sixers could very well turn that open slot into a better player, but there hasn’t been any tangible reports as of yet. If the signs are correct, they point to this being in reference to a future roster move, but don’t get too excited yet.
