What’s next for the Eagles and Zach Ertz?

After numerous reports claiming Zach Ertz would be moved during the NFL draft, the veteran tight end did not move. Philadelphia couldn’t find a deal they liked and now remain in an awkward situation with Ertz, who has made it very clear he wants out. There could be another reason why the Eagles held on to Ertz through the draft.
Howie Roseman might prefer some open cap space this offseason compared to another late-round draft pick. On the chance that Ertz is moved after June 1st like Alshon Jeffery, the Eagles would save an extra $3.6 million in cap space if Ertz is cut or traded. If Philly traded Ertz now, they would only open $4.9 million instead of $8.5 million. This maneuver allows more space to sign the Eagles draft class or possibly a cornerback or another position of need.
There is the chance that Zach remains an Eagle for the 2021 season. Just yesterday, Howie Roseman said Ertz was someone they value and respect a lot on their team. This quote was very likely a smokescreen for negotiations, but it wouldn’t be the most surprising thing to see Ertz around next season.
Regardless, it looks pretty doubtful that Zach Ertz remains in Philadelphia in 2021. He has been very vocal about his displeasure and wanting to move on from the Eagles. There have been numerous teams interested like the Indianapolis Colts, but whatever has been offered is not enough for the Eagles to part ways.

[…] 2021 is roughly $7.3M. The Eagles are currently sitting around $4.8M in cap space but can free up $8.5M if they release Zach Ertz after June 1st. With the team unable to find a trade suitor for Ertz up to this point, I’d say that’s […]
