76ers acquire 53rd pick in NBA Draft for cash considerations

The 76ers wasted no time making moves on draft day, acquiring the 53rd pick in the 2021 NBA Draft from the New Orleans Pelicans for cash considerations. The 53rd pick originally belonged to the Dallas Mavericks before moving to the Pelicans. Philadelphia now owns the 28th, 50th, and 53rd selections in tonight’s draft. According to Shams Charania, the Sixers sent $2 million for the pick. The NBA allows each team to move and receive up to $5.6 million a season.
There have been many rumors regarding a potential trade during the draft, but all signs pointed to Philly being sellers, not buyers. Despite that, moving cash for a draft selection is always a good move and gives you another asset to develop or flip. Some of the names that the 76ers could target at 53 included Luka Garza and Austin Reaves.
More moves will likely still be on the way during tonight’s draft, which kicks off at 8:00. Ben Simmons rumors have been picking up, but while a draft-day trade could happen, any deal will likely need more time to materialize.
