Eagles cut 5 players ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline

While the NFL’s 53 man deadline isn’t until 4 PM on Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles have wasted no time trimming down their roster. Yesterday morning the Eagles announced they would be cutting Cary Angeline, Elijah Holyfield, Marken Michel, JaQuan Bailey, and Rashad Smith.

Holyfield is the most notable name here, the son of famous boxer Evander Holyfield. Elijah saw decent time in the preseason, but there was no room on the roster between Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Jordan Howard, and Kenny Gainwell.

Cary Angeline was brought in a few weeks ago following the injuries to both Tyree Jackson and Jason Croom. Angeline was a long shot as well but provided depth at TE while Philadelphia was shorthanded.

There will be many names let go over the next 48 hours, but some players, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, could’ve saved themselves after solid showings against the Jets on Friday.
