Trending: Asante Samuel, Eagles knew Nnamdi Asomugha was overrated after just one practice

We try not to think about it too often, but Eagles fans will never forget the disaster that was Nnamdi Asomugha.
After becoming a household name as one of the NFL’s elite cornerbacks, Philadelphia signed Asomugha to a five-year, $60M contract in 2011. It only took one rep in training camp for the Eagles to realize their mistake.
Former All-Pro corner Asante Samuel recently appeared on the I AM ATHLETE podcast and spoke about various topics, including his tenure in Philadelphia. When the ex-Raider’s name came up, Samuel stated that he already knew Asomugha was overrated coming into camp.
Co-host LeSean McCoy then tells a story from that summer where tight end Brent Celek cooked Asomugha on a post-corner route during the very first practice.
Yikes.
Samuel also stated the Eagles pursued Asomugha partly because of Samuel’s personal matters that kept him from attending camp. With the future of their Pro Bowl corner uncertain, Philadelphia felt pressured to offer Asomugha a lucrative deal.
Former defensive coordinator Juan Castillo certainly didn’t do him many favors, but Asomugha went on to allow the worst opponent passer rating in football over the next two years. After allowing just one touchdown from 2008-2010, Asomugha surrendered nine scores in 32 games for the Eagles.
Another wrinkle added to the infamous “Dream Team.”
