Williams has had an up and down career since entering the NFL in 2019. He logged 680 snaps as a rookie while making a career-high 12 starts. The following offseason, Williams suffered a career threatening injury, sustaining nerve damage in his shoulder during offseason workouts. He missed the entirety of the 2020 season because of it.
In 2021, he bounced back a bit, recording two interceptions and 41 combined tackles while making eight starts. Williams allowed an impressive 58.1 completion percentage and 71.7 passer rating on 62 targets that season.
It wasn’t enough, however, as the Cleveland Browns used their first-round pick on CB Greg Newsome in 2022 to effectively replace Williams.
At just 25 years old, Williams’ NFL legacy is still far from being complete. At the very least, Williams will serve as solid depth behind Darius Slay and James Bradberry. Standing at 6-foot-2, Williams is primarily an outside corner, but can fill in at the nickel if need be. That could pay dividends in 2023 given Avonte Maddox’s spotty injury history.
Before the Williams signing, it felt like Howie and Co. could target a corner in the first-round of the upcoming NFL Draft. Now, I wouldn’t be shocked if they wait until day two or three to address the position – if at all.
