Eagles Coaching Updates: Matt Patricia joins staff as senior defensive assistant

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles official website inadvertently announced the hiring of former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia as the team’s senior defensive assistant.
The announcement was quickly deleted off the team’s website, although a handful of other coaching updates remain on the front page. Shortly after the Patricia to the Eagles rumors took over Twitter, head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed that the team was “trending in the direction” of bringing Patricia on board.
And now it’s official, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Patricia has reportedly been on the Eagles radar for a good portion of the offseason. His name was floated around for the once vacant linebackers coach job, before the Eagles filled it with DJ Eliot. The Eagles still managed to get him on board, however, and now he and defensive coordinator Sean Desai will be the architects of this new-look Birds defense.
The hiring of Patricia still comes with a fair amount of skepticism, namely because of his past relationship with Eagles star defensive back Darius Slay. The two overlapped in Detroit from 2018-’19 and Slay hasn’t minced words when speaking about their relationship. One of the main reasons he wanted out of Detroit was because of Patricia.
Sirianni did later tell reporters that he spoke with Slay about the hiring. He didn’t go into details about what was said, but we have to assume Slay at least sort of gave it his stamp of approval.
I can’t say I’m stoked about the hiring, but it’s not the worst thing in the world. Like Sirianni said during Thursday’s presser, he’ll have another former head coach on his staff – something he values – and Patricia could also be a good crutch for Desai as he tries to navigate being a first-year defensive coordinator.
For all the shit he gets, Patricia did learn from the best defensive mind in the sport, Bill Belichick, for years. That counts for something. There’s no doubt he adds something to this defensive coaching staff.
