Eagles Buzz: NFL insider says Philly has the best QB room in the league

The Eagles’ QB Factory is booming, as always.
NFL insider Bucky Brooks recently ranked the best combos at 11 key positions across the NFL as we inch closer to the 2023 season. To no one’s surprise, he ranked the Eagles combo at QB as the best in the league, with MVP runner-up Jalen Hurts leading the way, and former second overall pick Marcus Mariota backing him up.
Brooks on the Eagles QB factory
“The second-place finisher in 2022 MVP voting, Hurts has emerged as a top-five quarterback, thanks to dynamic playmaking abilities as a run-pass threat on the perimeter. His potential to churn out 100-yard rushing games or 300-yard passing outings makes him one of the most challenging matchups in the league. This offseason, the Eagles added a backup with similar traits. Mariota is a former starter with the experience, expertise and explosiveness to run a Philadelphia offense loaded with RPOs and option tactics. The 29-year-old is the perfect insurance policy to preserve the team’s chances at making another Super Bowl run.”

Howie Roseman has always emphasized having multiple capable quarterbacks on his roster, regardless of how good or how much the starter is getting paid. Ever since he re-gained GM duties during the 2016 offseason, Roseman has consistently had a solid backup QB on his rosters.
Aside from Nick Foles, Mariota could be the best backup the Eagles have had over the past 6-7 years. Gardner Minshew was a fine backup, but some of the flaws that held him back from being a franchise QB reared their ugly head during his two starts last season.
What separates Mariota from the crop of backups the Eagles have had in recent years is his skill set. If Hurts goes down with an injury, Mariota should be able to step right in and run the same RPO system that Hurts has nearly perfected. When Minshew had to step in for two games last year, it was obvious that he didn’t have the athletic ability to effectively run any RPO action. Given his lack of mobility, defenses didn’t have to account for Minshew taking off and running. The same can’t be said for Mariota.
We should see plenty of Mariota once the preseason rolls around. There, we’ll get a better idea of how the Eagles offense could operate with Mariota at the helm.
