Along with signing Jack, the Eagles also brought in LB Zach Cunningham on the same day. Two weeks into their Eagles tenures, it became clear which backer the team favored.
Jack was reportedly struggling in practice, falling down the depth chart seemingly every day. During Thursday’s preseason contest against Cleveland, Cunningham got the majority of the first-team reps alongside Nakobe Dean, while Jack logged 29 snaps; most of which came in the second half.
During Jack’s first media availability with the Eagles, he told reporters that he considered going to trade school prior to signing with Philly. It seems like those plans may be back in the fold after this announcement.
A look at the Eagles LB depth chart
Now that Jack is gone, along with Shaun Bradley being out for the season with a torn Achilles, the depth at linebacker is, once again, a huge question mark.
Dean and Cunningham appear to be the two starting backers. Barring a crazy turn of events or an injury, this will more than likely be the starting duo come Week 1. Behind them, we have Christian Elliss, who’s been impressive all throughout the summer. We also have Nicholas Morrow, who was signed to a one-year deal during free agency. With all the movement at the position, both Morrow and Elliss essentially have their roster spots solidified.
I have a good amount of faith in Dean and Cunningham to hold down the starting roles. It just would have been nice to have a guy like Jack backing them up, given his wealth of experience in this league. Nevertheless, he wasn’t going to start, and it’s pretty clear his head and heart weren’t totally in it.
