Britain Covey responds to JAKIB Media misquoting him in a Philadelphia Inquirer article on Jalen Hurts

Eagles return man and Certified Short King Britain Covey hit Twitter to respond to a JAKIB Media livestream featuring Dan Sileo and Barrett Brooks in which the two hosts were apparently misquoting him from a recent article about Jalen Hurts in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

To recap – Covey was quoted in an article by Jeff McLane on January 15, titled “Inside the makeup of Jalen Hurts: Overly stoic leader or just quiet and misunderstood?”

Britain Covey had this to say about the oft-stoic quarterback:

Because Hurts is all about football, most of his important interactions at NovaCare are overwhelmingly with Sirianni, offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, quarterbacks coach Alex Tanney, center Jason Kelce, receiver A.J. Brown, and (DeVonta) Smith.

But he isn’t exactly an island. Hurts does interact with players outside his circle. He’ll have lunch in the cafeteria with practice squad members, according to punt returner Britain Covey. He has relationships with various staff members, and even gave a shout-out to locker room attendant Tony Santiago during the Eagles’ playoff run a year ago.

The outgoing Covey, who may be the polar opposite of Hurts in temperament, is of the opinion that authenticity is most important when it comes to quarterbacks and head coaches.

“There’s always room for improvement. Being able to analyze yourself is very difficult and that’s when you need mentors to help you out,” Covey said. “So, yes, it’s not like Jalen is perfect. … I think it’s just better than the alternative of asking everyone what they think you should be or do, and then pretty soon an effort to become everything to everyone, you become no one.”

——

“I’ve played for coaches before that claim to have an open-door policy and their door is always open, but they’re really intimidating,” Covey said. “And I think that Jalen is similar to that in that he has an open-door policy, but because of his personality, at times, if you haven’t been around him enough, it can be a little bit intimidating.”

Seems like a pretty run of the mill comment on his franchise QB, right? Of course, if you’re lacking the necessary brain function to read full sentences and synthesize information, then you might have trouble understanding that. Unfortunately for JAKIB Media, it looks Sileo and Brooks fall into that camp based on how grossly they managed to misquote the article.

Britain Covey responds to JAKIB Media “misquoting him” from Inky article:

Britain Covey responded over multiple tweets, swiftly shutting down the misquote:

Britain Covey JAKIB Media Response

That’s a pretty damning response as far as I’m concerned. There was no backtracking or scrambling, which would have been the case if what they said was remotely accurate. Instead. the Eagles return man dropped the hammer on the most bogus report of 2024.

Jeff McLane chimed in after providing more details on what Britain Covey actually said:

You know you’ve totally screwed the pooch on your reporting when Jeff McLane has to come in and correct you. As McLane stated, that wasn’t close to what Britain Covey said, as was represented in the Inquirer story.

1. He was complimentary of Jalen Hurts’ leadership style and said he was authentic to himself and said he shouldn’t change to appease others. He also noted that Hurts will have lunch with players outside his circle like practice squad players.

2. And when he was talking about Hurts’ open-door policy and approaching him, he wasn’t talking about himself, he was talking about how new players could be “a little bit” intimidated. Covey wasn’t relating it to team tension at all.

Just to refresh your memory, here’s the actual quote from Britain Covey:

“I’ve played for coaches before that claim to have an open-door policy and their door is always open, but they’re really intimidating. And I think that Jalen is similar to that in that he has an open-door policy, but because of his personality, at times, if you [are a new player and] haven’t been around him enough, it can be a little bit intimidating.”

What a shocker that Dan Sileo and JAKIB Media were misquoting Covey!

No surprise here. Dan Sileo might be the biggest hack in sports media, and that’s coming from the guy that advocated (semi-jokingly) for schoolchildren to pack Zyns so we can keep up with the Chinese in educating our youth. Some may try to say this was an attempt at paraphrasing, but saying something completely different than the person you’re quoting isn’t paraphrasing, it’s straight up lying for engagement.

Honestly it’s embarrassing work from Sileo. I’d tell him to do better, but I think that ship sailed a long time ago.
