SOFT: BYU student section forced to remove “Horns Down” t-shirts, Cougars HC Mark Pope bends the knee to Longhorns, Big 12 Conference
The Texas Longhorns lost to the No. 21 BYC Cougars 84-72 on Saturday and reignited the national discourse on the “Horns Down” symbol that for whatever reason, has caused so much controversy across the university’s men’s basketball and football programs.

What makes it even worse is that the BYU head coach Mark Pope basically supported the decision and really, took accountability for making the students change their t-shirts.

“That’s not just us, that’s not how we roll,” said Pope. “It was a miscalculation [by] a couple of eager kids — we love the eagerness of these fans, but it’s not what we do here. We love all 18,000 people in this gym, they were incredible tonight, and just so you know, that’s not what we should do.”

How was that a miscalculation?
Seemed pretty fucking calculated to paint letters on t-shirts and wear them to a basketball game, right?
There’s no shot that I would ever cover up my shirt. Texas is lucky this happened at BYU where they don’t drink or say curse words and have a coach who will literally bend the knee to a team that is leaving the Big 12 Conference next year to join the SEC.
“Horns Down” isn’t a slur. It’s literally nothing. There’s absolutely no reason to remove t-shirts or prevent anyone from saying that. There is literally NOTHING wrong with it.
What is even happening?
In any other arena, you would think they would have been met with some type of resistance. If I went to BYU, I would be furious that our head coach just threw the entire student section under the bus.
I mean seriously, covering up a shirt that has a letter painted on it and when read all together, it says “Horns Down”?
Honestly, if I was a UT fan, student, or even an athlete, I would make a stand against this type of behavior and come out and say that no one actually gives a shit or is offended by “Horns Down”.
This shit has to stop and I feel like the only way it will, at least until SEC Country refuses to list, will be if people that actually support the Longhorns come out and say that pretending to be offended by “Horns Down” is embarrassing to the entire university and sports program.
Texas HC Rodney Terry after Longhorns lost to UCF
Earlier this season, Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry threw a hissy fit in a long-winded rant where called UCF players “classless” for making the “Horns Down” gesture after beating Texas in Austin. This is what Rodney Terry said after UCF came back from 16-points down to beat Texas and celebrated by doing “Horns Down”.
The Big 12 started cracking down on the “Horns Down” gesture 2-3 years ago. Texas, acting like a bunch of losers, had their “legendary coach” Mack Brown call the hand gesture “disrespectful” and initially started the conversation with the league about issuing a penalty for opposing teams who do it.
I’m a WVU alumni so I know first hand how annoying Texas is and how bad it looks caring about the gesture. In 2018, West Virginia University beat the Longhorns 42-41 and quarterback Will Grier and wide receiver David Sills V were both flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties after flashing Horns Down gesture following touchdowns.

Side Note: I will say, WVU wasn’t the first to do it. Baker Mayfield flashed it back in 2016 when the Sooners beat Texas but Will Grier still has the best “Horns Down” celly of all time.
After WVU beat Texas, their dork quarterback Sam Ehlinger said the following:
“I remember every single team/player that disrespects the rich tradition of the University of Texas by putting the Horns down. Do not think it will be forgotten in the future.”
Chillout Sammy. Weirdo.
That started the penalties for the gesture in the Big 12 but luckily, it looks like when Texas makes the leap to the SEC, they won’t carry much weight with “Horns Down” unsportsmanlike penalties because, well, SEC doesn’t cater to the bottom feeder teams in their conference.
