Report: Eagles discussed hiring Bill Belichick as their new head coach, opted to stay with Sirianni

On Wednesday, ESPN dropped a collaborative story detailing Bill Belichick’s exit from New England and his subsequent job search. Reportedly, the Eagles had some real interest in bringing in the 8X Super Bowl champ.

According to the story, Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman are both huge fans of Belichick, so much so that Lurie asked a confidant of his about Belichick. League circles even believed Belichick and Philadelphia could be a good match.

Per the story, “Roseman told ESPN he had a conversation with Belichick, a check-in to see how the coach was doing after he was out in New England. A source close to Belichick confirmed there was no talk during the call about working for the Eagles.”

In the end, despite having interest in Belichick, the organization still believed in Nick Sirianni. Obviously, the Eagles wouldn’t have had any interest (most likely) if the team didn’t completely fall apart at the end of the year.

And above all else, Belichick is approaching retirement, and many believe he’ll only coach for two more years or so. ESPN writes, “‘You’ll have to start over again,’ said a source with firsthand knowledge of the Eagles’ thinking. ‘Who would replace him? He hasn’t had a good record of developing coaches. They were afraid that he’ll have changed everything and every person, and [then] you’ll be starting from scratch again. He didn’t demand those changes, but they felt like, if we hire him, we have to give everything to him and trust how he does it.'”

Hiring Belichick is essentially a two year deal. Overhauling everything the organization does for two years simply isn’t worth it. Especially for a guy who hasn’t done anything of note since Tom Brady left him.
