Eagles take Clemson running back Will Shipley after trading back twice

After three trades in the fourth round, the Eagles landed on Will Shipley, the running back out of Clemson, with the 127th pick. Shipley joins newly acquired Saquon Barkley, Kenneth Gainwell, Lew Nichols, and Tyrion Davis-Price.

Will Shipley: Round 4, Pick 127

Shipley is a quick and elusive scat back who tallied over 30 receptions in each of the past two seasons. During his time at Clemson, Will Shipley became a nuisance to ACC defenses, racking up 33 rushing touchdowns and 3,350 total yards. With only 526 carries in college, he does not carry a ton of “tread on the tires” to the NFL and runs in around a 4.4-second 40-yard dash.

Given his smaller frame at five-foot-eleven, 206 pounds, Will Shipley needs help refining his pass protection if he wants to be a third-down back. With only 27 missed tackles forced last season, don’t expect Will Shipley to break many tackles, but rather use his quick short burst and cut up the field wiggling through defenders.

After three defenders were picked so far in this year’s draft, Howie saw something in Will Shipley as a flurry of running backs went after him. The Eagles still have more picks in the fifth and sixth rounds, but it seems clear that Howie is trying to stack draft capital for next year as well.
