Backwards Hat Theory: Colin Cowherd says JJ Redick can’t be an NBA head coach because of his podcast look
It’s no secret JJ Redick is an elite basketball mind. ESPN viewers love him, he has a podcast with LeBron James, and is even garnering interest for NBA head coaching jobs.
But one of his latest podcast clips ruffled some feathers among the old guard. Namely Colin Cowherd, the greatest hater of his generation, over on FS1.
Colin Cowherd took issue, not with JJ Redick’s takes or analysis, but his backwards hat:

“I didn’t hear a word LeBron said. I couldn’t stop staring at the hat.”
Only Colin Cowherd can open a segment like this. He’s truly one of the best to ever do it, not because he’s right, but because he’s showman unlike any other.
Cowherd has espoused this take before, but this is the first time he’s brought it into the NBA arena. Normally, he’s saying the likes of Brock Purdy or Carson Wentz can’t be elite franchise quarterbacks because of the orientation of their caps.
Not only was he right about one and could be right about the other, but it also yielded one the greatest screengrabs in FS1 history.

This is a generational level of commitment to the bit from Colin Cowherd.
He’s right, JJ Redick probably doesn’t care at all that he thinks he looks like the guy he hired to move his couch. But it is an absolutely hilarious hill to die on as far as I’m concerned.
This is 100% something my dad would say. He’s an old school Port Richmond guy and has told me to turn my hat around more times than I can count.
And I hate to say it, but I see where Cowherd’s coming from with this one. There’s definitely a stodgy owner or GM that’s taken JJ Redick off their coaching search list because of this. I just know it.
At the same time, he’d be a hell of an NBA head coach. Cowherd’s right, LeBron wouldn’t do a podcast with some schmuck. He’s doing it because Redick is one of the elite basketball minds on planet earth, and communicates his ideas in a way even dumbasses like me can understand.
But, hey, JJ Redick, if you’re reading this, I do need some help moving this weekend. Ice cold Coors Banquets on me, pal.
