The Philadelphia 76ers should keep a close eye on Donovan Mitchell if no extension is signed in Cleveland
Make no mistake, the Philadelphia 76ers will be “major players” this summer as the NBA shifts focus over to the draft and free agency.
While the 76ers have already been involved in countless numbers of rumors, connecting them with players like LeBron James, Paul George, Brandon Ingram, and Kevin Durant, another name that could potentially be in play would be Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell.
Donovan Mitchell has yet to sign an extension with the Cavaliers and will be a free agent in 2025. If Cleveland doesn’t want to give Mitchell a max contract extension, there’s thought that he could be traded this summer so the Cavaliers won’t part ways for nothing in return.
The 76ers have roughly $60 million in cap space and up to FIVE first-round picks eligible to trade this summer – starting on NBA Draft night.
Tyrese Maxey All-NBA snub will end up costing him a lot of money in upcoming contract extension >>
At 27-years old, Donovan Mitchell averaged 26.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game with the Cavs in the regular season. In the playoffs, he averaged 29.6 points per game.
Donovan Mitchell to Philly?
Personally, and maybe I’m just bias, but I don’t think Mitchell can be the face of a franchise. He would however, perfectly next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
While it might be a fever dream thinking that Mitchell can end up in Philadelphia, it really comes down to if Cleveland Believes that he is “the guy” to lead their franchise. Recent reports indicate that Mitchell has “all of the power” in Cleveland which makes sense given the fact that the Cavaliers literally have nothing without him.
However, the fact that the Cleveland Cavaliers have nothing without him, could mean that Mitchell might look elsewhere to join an actual contender this summer and the Philadelphia 76ers should be the first team calling to find out.
