Jeopardy contestants stumped

Jeopardy! contestants had no idea the Phillies won the 2008 World Series

Jeopardy! contestants are considered some of America’s best and brightest, but even they have blind spots when it comes to their trivia knowledge. Sports has been widely considered as one of their worst categories, and a recent episode showed that stigma still rings true.

The Jeopardy! contestants were stumped when asked which NL team was the first to 10,000 losses in 2007, then won the World Series in 2008:

I’m not going to expect these eggheads to know every single piece of sports trivia, but this is a pretty basic piece of information. They even had Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard as an extra clue!

Obviously, the Philadelphia Phillies took home the crown in 2008. Their inability to muster that as an answer was disrespectful to those players and the Fighting City of Philadelphia.

I do have to give Christina credit, though. She came in confident with her answer. Sure, it was completely wrong—not even close—but she was confident.

Then again, she did rob us of the classic Jeopardy! moment when the contestants just stand there silently like schoolchildren caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Blank stares, just praying for the buzzer so they can move on from their temporary moment of immense shame.

I’ve been there many times myself, both as a child and in my adult life. These days, it’s mostly when I say something I shouldn’t have to my girlfriend. Either way, she doesn’t forget, so why should I?

I just know these people were devastated when they saw 21st Century Sports as a category. They probably would have been happier with Baroque Poetry or 12th-century Science and likely would have aced it with ease.

I mean, just look at the board. If they could, they would have answered anything but sports trivia. They could have told you where Jimmy Hoffa was buried.

Sure, 2008 was 16 years ago now, which, even at 26, makes me feel wildly aged. But still, if you go on Jeopardy! and purport yourself to be one of the smartest people in the country, you gotta know some basic baseball trivia.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.
