Eagles 2024 Training Camp: The biggest storylines heading into this highly anticipated week

Finally (insert the Rock meme), the Philadelphia Eagles are back.

As I’m sure you know, the Eagles started red hot last season and won 10 of their first 11 games before to collapsing down the stretch and losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Super Wild Card Weekend. To rub salt in the wound, that happened following a gutting loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2022 Super Bowl.

NFL Training Camp has returned. Both rookies and veterans will report to NovaCare Complex for training camp on Tuesday as the Eagles will enter the 2024 season with lofty expectations, along with several questions following a complete meltdown to end last season.

There are plenty of things to pay attention to as the Birds get prepped for the 2024 season, including head coach Nick Sirianni and his new coaching staff on the offensive and defensive sides of the football led by Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio.

Jason Kelce is also not under center – meaning the Eagles will start camp with a new leader in the trenches for the first time in over a decade. Pair that with a ton of new blood in the locker room and several key position battles and there’s a lot of answers that Eagles fans will get ahead of Week 1 in Sao Paulo, Brazil against the Green Bay Packers.

Kellen Moore: Jalen Hurts 4th coordinator in the last 5 seasons

The Philadelphia Eagles hope that new offensive coordinator Kellen More can inject some life into a unit that hit a road black at the end of last season under Brian Johnson.

Multiple formations, early-down aggressiveness, and a quick passing game (with motion) should do wonders for Hurts and all of the elite weapons on the offensive side of the football.

Saquon Barkley joins an already-stacked Philadelphia Eagles Offense

Kellen Moore and the Eagles will welcome Saquon Barkley to what should be an already high-powered offense that features Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert.

The 27-year old Barkley signed a 3-year, $37.75 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

In six seasons with the New York Giants, Barkley was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, amassing 5,211 rushing yards and 47 total touchdowns. He will be replacing D’Andre Swift, who is is now a member of the Chicago Bears.

Barkley had 962 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns in 14 games last season and should benefit from playing in a much better offense, specifically an elite offensive line, here in Philadelphia.

Barkley should FEAST in the Eagles new-look offense. While fans are commonly chanting “run the ball” the last two Eagles’ lead-running backs finished Top 5 in rushing…

  • Miles Sanders finished 5th in the NFL in rushing with the Eagles in 2022.
  • D’Andre Swift finished 5th in the NFL in rushing with the Eagles in 2023.

Cam Jurgens and the Offensive Line

In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles drafted Cam Jurgens out of the University of Nebraska to be the eventual replacement for Jason Kelce.

Kelce, who announced his retirement over the offseason, held the center position for over a decade in Philadelphia and is still showing up to the NovaCare Complex on a daily basis – which I think it’s safe to say everyone knew that’d be the case.

Now, the Philadelphia Eagles turn to Cam Jurgens to fill Jason Kelce’s position at center. The 24-year-old started at right guard last season and his move to center will open up a competition at right guard.

Tyler Steen is expected to be given the starting role with, believe it or not, Mekhi Becton looking to take the starting position at right guard.

Brian Baldinger seems to believe Becton could be a force in this league if he stays healthy:

“Mekhi Becton had some knee issues in the past, but he has more power than anyone on the whole team. He is the best run blocker that the Eagles have. If he is healthy, he will play right guard for them. They are working him in there. I would keep an eye on Mekhi.”

Vic Fangio will lead a new-look Philadelphia Eagles Defense

The Eagles certainly aren’t hurting for talent, but they did invest resources into a lot of young talent on the defense that was in desperate need of fixing.

Using their first two picks in the draft to select Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean to fix the secondary was just the start of a much-needed makeover for the Eagles defense. Isaiah Rodgers, Kelee Ringo, and Josh Jobe will all be looking for playing time during the preseason and training camp – lining up to be one of the most contested position battles on the depth chart.

What about James Bradberry?

It’s still unclear what the Philadelphia Eagles plan to do with James Bradberry. The former starting cornerback for the Eagles received a horrible 56.6 grade from Pro Football Focus for his 2023 campaign, and with all of the new, young talent in the secondary, could be the odd-man out heading into Week 1 against the Packers.

We did see the Eagles working James Bradberry into the defense at safety during minicamp, but it remains unclear if they find him to be a suitable fit at the position heading into this week.

In The Trenches

Fangio defenses have been known for strong front-seven play and a “bend–don’t-break” approach that is designed to force opposing teams to nickel and dime their way down the football field.

The idea is to force turnovers and big plays by the defense, which starts up front in the trenches by applying pressure on the quarterback. Enter Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis who are expected to make significant leaps after Fletcher Cox announced his retirement – with Nolan Smith Jr also expected to get more playing time in his sophomore season.

Aside from draft picks, the Eagles also utilized the free agency period to fix some other holes in their defense. Bringing back fan favorite Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson projects to add some much-needed talent as well as intensity to a defense that seemed to lack it last season.

The other noteworthy free agent signing by Howie Roseman was taking a flyer on Devin White, and training camp will be a great opportunity to find out if they finally addressed the linebacker issue.
