CJ Gardner-Johnson

CJ Gardner-Johnson is (rightfully) getting dragged on social media for not backing up his trash talk

CJ Gardner-Johnson likes to talk his talk — before, during, and after the game. That’s completely fine, just as long as you back it up on the field. If you’ve watched any Eagles game this season, you’ll know he’s struggled mightily, all while continuing to run his mouth.

Before the Tampa Bay game on Sunday, CJGJ was filmed just moments before hitting the field. He looked squarely at the camera and said, “I’m about to put belt to ass today.” As we all know, he did not ‘put belt to ass’ on Sunday. In fact, every wideout he faced put belt to his ass and made him look stupid.

CJ Gardner-Johnson moments before disaster

CJ Gardner-Johnson went on to allow the first touchdown of the game, getting burnt by Mike Evans on a corner route. He finished the day with four receptions allowed on five targets for 28 yards, posting a 42.8 Pro Football Focus grade in the process — the worst mark of any Eagles starter.

On the season, he’s allowed four touchdowns in coverage, averaging one per game. He does lead defensive backs in one category though — missed tackles (8).

Now, CJ Gardner-Johnson is getting dragged all over social media. People are calling him the new Eli Apple, Antonio Brown is making fun of him every chance he gets, and to top it off, CJGJ blocked AB on Twitter so he couldn’t see his mean Tweets anymore.

Not a great look for CJGJ. He’s getting worked on and off the field. That’s not a spot you want to be in.

But he brought it on himself. His constant trash talking was always bound to catch up with him, considering he’s never really been a great safety. He has his moments, but all in all, he’s an average defensive back.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the trash talking. I want guys who bring that edge to the Eagles defense, but you have to back it up at least a little bit. CJ Gardner-Johnson has made one notable play this season — the fourth down stop against Atlanta in Week 2. Other than that, it’s been all bad.

He currently has a 50.6 overall grade on PFF, good for 65th among 76 qualifying safeties. Forget average, he’s been downright bad this season. Yet, he continues to talk shit. Like I said, I like the trash talk, but not when you get burnt every time you touch the field.

Maybe the bye week will give him, and the rest of the team, some time to think things over. And maybe, just maybe, change their ways a bit. Because the way it’s going right now for CJGJ, it’s not working. Something has to give.
