Eagles listed as potential landing spot for All-Pro wideout at NFL trade deadline
The Philadelphia Eagles and trade rumors go hand-in-hand. Howie Roseman likes to mix it up at the trade deadline every year, so of course they’re going to be linked to every notable name who could be available.
For some reason, the national media seems to be fixated on the Eagles trading for another wideout at the deadline. It was discussed on ESPN just a week or so ago, and now Bleacher Report is suggesting that DeAndre Hopkins could be a trade target for Roseman and Co.
Eagles listed as potential landing spot for DeAndre Hopkins
The Titans are a big longshot to make the playoffs this season, and Hopkins is an impending free agent. That’s the primary reason why Kristopher Knox ranked the wideout as the fourth-best player on B/R’s NFL Trade Block Big Board column heading into Week 6.
Meanwhile, the Eagles offense could use a third wide receiver to play alongside A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. While the 32-year-old isn’t the dominant player he used to be, he did have a 1,000-yard and seven-touchdown season with shaky quarterback play last year in Tennessee.
Obviously, adding Hopkins at the deadline would be a crazy move. Not only because a receiving trio of Hopkins, AJ Brown, and DeVonta Smith is just ridiculous to think about, but it also doesn’t make any sense at all.
For starters, the Eagles already went out and got a WR3 with Jahan Dotson. He’s barely done anything, even with both Brown and Smith missing time. On the season, Dotson has only been targeted 13 times and has hauled in six receptions for 35 yards.
Now, Hopkins is obviously a way better player than Dotson, but Dotson not getting targets doesn’t feel like a symptom of bad play on his part. The Eagles just have too many mouths to feed on offense — especially when they’re fully healthy.
Jalen Hurts has also shown a clear reliance on Brown when he’s healthy. He trusts Brown more than any other receiver on the roster, and that includes Smitty. I just don’t see how Hopkins fits into this offense. Even if his primary goal is winning games, he’s going to want at least some targets.
If Howie decides to wheel-and-deal at the deadline, I don’t think wideout will be the position he targets. Pass rusher, safety, or maybe even offensive line would be the positions I imagine Howie has in mind.
DeAndre Hopkins in an Eagles uniform would be cool and all, but let’s be realistic. Just because he might get traded doesn’t mean the Eagles will be the ones who end up with him.
