Flyers trade target Marco Rossi

Time for the Flyers to Pivot? Why Buying at the NHL Deadline Isn’t as Crazy as It Sounds

It’s early December, and the Philadelphia Flyers, sitting at 12-10, find themselves in an unexpected position: the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Sure, a 12-10 record doesn’t scream Stanley Cup contender, but let’s face it—this year’s Eastern Conference is soft and the Flyers have a legitimate shot to stay in the playoff race. However, in order to capitalize on it, GM Daniel Briere and President Keith Jones may need to adjust their rebuilding strategy.

The Eastern Conference is wide open for the Philadelphia Flyers

Flyers Standings

Why buy now while the team is still in a rebuild?

Yes, the Flyers are rebuilding. No, that doesn’t mean they have to sit on their hands at the trade deadline. This isn’t about chasing a rental or mortgaging the future for an aging star. Instead, Philly should look at acquiring young, underutilized players with high upside.

The Flyers have assets to make a move without derailing the rebuild. They own six picks in the first two rounds of the 2025 draft and several tradeable veterans like Scott Laughton and Rasmus Ristolainen. A smart, calculated move could net them a young player who fits their rebuild timeline while helping them remain competitive this season.

A Cautious Buy: Targeting Young Stars

The Athletic recently highlighted five centers the Flyers could target, and two names jump off the page: Trevor Zegras (Anaheim Ducks) and Marco Rossi (Minnesota Wild). Both are 23 years old, dynamic playmakers, and seemingly on the outs with their current teams.

  • Trevor Zegras: The Ducks have reportedly shown interest in Flyers forward Morgan Frost, making a potential swap realistic. Zegras already boasts two 60+ point seasons and would be a perfect fit alongside Matvei Michkov.
  • Marco Rossi: The Wild are rumored to be interested in Joel Farabee, Bobby Brink, and Scott Laughton. Rossi has yet to reach his full potential in Minnesota, but his skill set and upside could make him a fantastic addition to Philly’s young core.

Both players bring the kind of creativity and skill the Flyers desperately need down the middle.

Zegras and Rossi just make sense

The Dream Target: Dylan Cozens

If the Flyers want to aim high, Dylan Cozens of the Buffalo Sabres is the name to watch. Cozens, 23, has already racked up 100+ points over his last two seasons and is signed through 2029-30 at a reasonable $7.1 million AAV.

However, prying Cozens away from Buffalo would require a steep package, likely including multiple picks and top prospects. Buffalo’s reluctance to trade within the conference—much like Columbus with David Jiricek—makes this scenario even less likely.

What are the other options for the Flyers?

If buying cautiously doesn’t align with the Flyers’ vision, they could opt to stay the course and focus on the 2025 draft. With elite prospects like James Hagens, Michael Misa, and Roger McQueen available, there’s no shortage of high-end talent to bolster the rebuild.

Selling veterans like Laughton or Ristolainen for additional picks would also be a viable strategy. The Flyers are still a few pieces away from contending, and adding more young talent through the draft remains a sensible approach.

The Flyers find themselves in a unique position. They’re rebuilding but also competing. This doesn’t have to be an either-or situation. A smart, calculated trade for a young player like Zegras or Rossi could accelerate their rebuild while keeping them in the playoff mix.

Whether they buy, sell, or stand pat, one thing is clear: Daniel Briere and Keith Jones have a pivotal decision to make. With the Eastern Conference wide open, the Flyers have an opportunity to shape their future—and their present.
