11 Eagles crack PFF’s Top 101 Players list—But lets talk about these ‘rankings’
The Philadelphia Eagles capped off their season with a 40-22 Super Bowl LIX win, and now we’re into ranking season, where analysts try to make sense of the year that was.
PFF dropped its annual Top 101 Players of 2024, and Philly was well represented, landing 11 players on the list. That’s the most of any team in the NFL, so let’s start with a round of applause for that. But let’s also talk about how some of these rankings make absolutely no sense.
The Eagles Who Made the Cut:
Here’s where Philly’s players landed…
- 91. QB Jalen Hurts (Fell 19 spots despite winning Super Bowl MVP… make it make sense)
- 90. DT Milton Williams (Free-agent-to-be is about to get paid)
- 78. CB Quinyon Mitchell (Rookie getting early recognition)
- 77. DT Jalen Carter (Already one of the best interior defenders in the game)
- 64. G Landon Dickerson (One of the top guards in football, absolute monster in the run game)
- 45. CB Cooper DeJean (Had a Super Bowl for the ages, but his 86.3 season grade led ALL cornerbacks)
- 30. WR A.J. Brown (One of the most dominant receivers in the game)
- 18. OT Lane Johnson (Still elite, even in Year 12)
- 11. LB Zack Baun (Breakout star of the defense)
- 10. RB Saquon Barkley (Super Bowl champ and top-tier back)
- 3. OT Jordan Mailata (PFF’s highest-graded offensive player in 2024)
Hurts at 91? Baker Mayfield Over Him? Stop It.
This is where PFF loses me. Jalen Hurts, the Eagles’ Super Bowl MVP and the leader of the best team in football, drops 19 spots from last year. Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield is at No. 28 and Justin Herbert is 58 spots ahead of him.
PFF ranks Jalen Hurts as 91st best player in the NFL, puts seven QBs ahead of him
I know these lists are built off PFF’s grading system, but there is no world where Baker Mayfield and Justin Herbert are better than Jalen Hurts. If this is the level of “analysis” we’re doing, then let’s just throw darts at a board and call it a ranking.
The PFF Top 10 Is… Mostly Fine?
PFF’s Top 10 isn’t terrible, but there’s always room for debate…
- Lamar Jackson, QB – Ravens
- Myles Garrett, EDGE – Browns
- Jordan Mailata, OT – Eagles
- Joe Burrow, QB – Bengals
- Derrick Henry, RB – Ravens
- Josh Allen, QB – Bills
- Creed Humphrey, C – Chiefs
- Chris Jones, DT – Chiefs
- T.J. Watt, EDGE – Steelers
- Saquon Barkley, RB – Eagles
Mailata at No. 3? Love it. Barkley at No. 10? That works. But explain to me how Derrick Henry is five spots ahead of Saquon Barkley when Barkley was arguably better in every meaningful category. We’re just making stuff up now.
PFF crowns Jordan Mailata as the NFL’s Best Offensive Player in 2024
What This List Proves (Nothing)
Look, we all love a good offseason ranking debate, and that’s exactly what this list was made for. PFF’s analytics-based system is great in theory, but it sometimes completely misses the mark on actual impact.
Eagles fans can celebrate having 11 players on this list, but the real discussion should be about some of these head-scratching placements.
At the end of the day, though? The only ranking that really matters is the scoreboard from Super Bowl LIX.
