Philadelphia Union open 2025 season with a statement win over Orlando City

The Philadelphia Union wasted no time making their presence felt in the 2025 MLS season, rolling into Orlando and putting four goals past a stunned Orlando City SC in a thrilling 4-2 victory.

Not only was this a statement win, but it also marked a successful debut for new head coach Bradley Carnell, as the Union embark on a new era of soccer in Philadelphia.

Tai Baribo Steals the Show

While Marco Pašalić made an immediate impact for Orlando with a debut brace, this night belonged to Tai Baribo.

  • Baribo bagged two goals, scoring in both halves to pace the Union’s attack.
  • His first came in the 24th minute, tapping in a Kai Wagner pass to bring the match level at 1-1.
  • His second in the 64th minute effectively put the game to bed, deflecting a Francis Westfield pass into the net to make it 4-1.

Not a bad way for Baribo to announce himself as a key player for Philly.

Second-Half Domination

The second half was pure class. After going into halftime tied 1-1, Philadelphia flipped the switch and put on a masterclass in attacking football:

  • 48th minute: Daniel Gazdag powered a Quinn Sullivan cross past Pedro Gallese to give the Union their first lead at 2-1.
  • 51st minute: Mikael Uhre capitalized on a terrible defensive error from Orlando’s Rodrigo Schlegel and blasted a shot home for 3-1.
  • 64th minute: Baribo’s second goal of the match gave the Union a commanding 4-1 lead.

Pašalić pulled one back in the 79th minute, but it was far too little, too late.

Andre Blake Shines in Milestone Match

Andre Blake reached a massive milestone on Saturday, making his 300th career appearance for the Union. The three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year was tested early and often, but held firm:

  • Faced 23 total shots (10 on target)
  • Made six saves
  • Kept the Union in control despite Orlando’s relentless attack

Blake continues to be one of the most reliable shot-stoppers in MLS, and Philadelphia will lean on him heavily once again in 2025.

A Perfect Start for Bradley Carnell

Carnell couldn’t have asked for a better debut as head coach. The team was organized, clinical in attack, and resilient defensively, even when under pressure. With a high-energy pressing style and a clear ability to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes, the club looks like a team that could make some noise in 2025.
