WATCH: Mookie Betts is now the frontrunner for the worst throw of the 2025 MLB season

Mookie Betts might be swinging a hot bat to start 2025, but his arm was the coldest thing on the field Tuesday night in Atlanta.

In what can only be described as the worst throw of the MLB season so far (and probably one of the worst you’ll see all year), Betts turned a routine double play attempt into a blooper-reel submission. With one out already recorded on a grounder to second, Betts stepped on the bag and then unleashed an absolute missile… directly into the abyss.

The throw missed Freddie Freeman by a zip code. It rolled past the dugout and kept going until it kissed the outfield wall. The Braves, who had a runner on second, took full advantage and scored with ease to go up 1-0. The Dodgers didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or dig a hole behind the mound and bury the baseball.

Betts isn’t a natural shortstop. He’s a Gold Glove right fielder turned infield experiment, and the Dodgers have been fully committed to this science project for over a year now.

Sure, he’s hitting .385 with a couple bombs through his first few games, so it’s not like he’s hurting the team overall but that was ugly and whenever you can talk shit on the undefeated powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers, you do it.

The error felt like a reminder that no matter how elite of an athlete Betts is—and he’s definitely that—playing shortstop at the MLB level is an entirely different beast.

Betts is still one of the most electric players in the game, and Dodgers fans shouldn’t overreact to one laughably bad toss. But if L.A. keeps letting him figure out shortstop on the fly in games that matter, they better be ready to hold their breath a lot more.

Luckily, the throw didn’t impact the game because the Atlanta Braves are off to a historically bad 0-6 start to begin the 2025 MLB season…something that here in Philly, we’re very happy about.
