Mac McWilliams is a dream defensive back for Vic Fangio’s defense
The Eagles doubled down on defense with a Vic Fangio prototype cornerback, Mac McWilliams out of UCF. Fangio craves a true slot corner with bursts of speed and incredible play recognition in his defensive backs running a complex zone system.
Mac McWilliams is a perfect fit for Fangio’s defense
McWilliams is a true difference-maker in zone coverage, ranking in the 99th percentile of PFF’s zone coverage grades. After four years at Baylor, McWilliams transferred to UCF and was graded as the Knights’ best defender with an 81.6 defensive grade.
At five-foot-ten, 185 pounds, Mac McWilliams is destined to hone his raw athleticism as a slot cornerback even though Cooper DeJean (not a safety) currently owns that spot. McWilliams, also like Cooper, returned punts for Baylor in college. The more versatile defensive backs in Vic Fangio’s system, the better. And the Eagles selected another high-motor defensive player in McWilliams.
